Modified for hushed conversations perhaps? Or a front runner to the cone of silence.

It is a very rare US Signal Corps transmitter.  I thought it would go for more.

I guess somebody knew what it was and made the seller an offer he could not refuse! Probably a fraction of the actual value.

I did not see that it was relisted after the seller ended it. I agree that seems like a low price.

November 1, 1892 is White's solid back patent. What are the others?

I believe they are these:

  • US406567 1886-1889 Telephone
  • US463569 1877-1891 Combined Telegraph and Telephone
  • US485311 1892-1892 Telephone (Solid Back Transmitter)
Thanks

There was another early, rare 6-digit WE transmitter that just sold:

I had the high bid at $34 with one second left, screen went black. I thought I stole it, but alas I did not...Doug

it sure looked like it was hacked together, check the printing on the wood. The transmitter looked pristine inside the box....Doug

It is a 6 digit, so it must be early.  Kevin Duck pointed out that there is a "6" stamped on the back of the plunger.  Typically there is a "7" or a "3" indicating high or low resistance.  So far its purpose is a mystery.
