Title: payphone locks & keys
Post by: HarrySmith on January 23, 2012, 06:44:27 PM
There have been lots of questions and discussion on payphone locks and finding or making keys for them. I just found an ad in the TCI monthly newsletter for January by a guy who states he can fix all locks and cut keys. I have no experience with him but I am inquiring about a key for my payphone. Since he is in the newsletter I am assuming he is a member, whatever that is worth. I will update as to my experience with getting a key. Here is the ad:

I repair ALL payphone locks. All Ace tubular cam locks and keys repaired and cut. Hard to find key blanks. Northern, Western, and Automatic Payphone lock and keys.

Just got off the phone with Jody. Since I cannot get my phone open I cannot get the numbers he needs to make a key. He is going to call me later and try to walk me through identifying the lock. Very nice guy & very helpful. Also just got an email through the list and thought I would share it:

Unsolicited testimonial...

The JKL Museum had several upper housing and coin door locks that were broken one way or another.  Gary Goff steered us to a fellow TCI member in California, Jody Haralson.  I sent him our locks and he fixed and returned them all in about a week.  He takes them apart and repairs them.  When he puts them back together, there are a couple of small solder joints on the lock.  But the lock is basically unseen and we didn't care what they looked like as long as they worked.  And now they work just fine!  And his rates were very reasonable.

You can email Jody at haralsonlock@aol.com if you have need of his services.

Harry do you have an AE or WE payphone?  I'm guessing you need to get into the vault on an AE phone.

And single slot or 3 slot? I have AE single slot vault locks and keys and I have 29S upper housing locks for AE 3 slot phones. No 29S keys though.

It's a WE 3 slot. I posted it in Decembers find of the month as I got it cheap from Craigslist.

I remember seeing that, great buy.

I have a couple of WE  3 slots I bought that the guy had no keys for.  Turned out they had the wallmounts on them and when I unslotted them  I could dissasemble it all from the backplate as there were no coinboxes in them. The circular security locks were on a threaded stud I could unscrew from the back.  Inside was all untouched and original on both it seemed.  I got new vault and top locks but the old unkeyed locks and circular cylinder locks would be nice to have keys for.
