When restoring my Princesses, I try to avoid working with the repainted housings and handsets, since I think that there's enough of the unpainted originals around. On occasion I'm not sure if the black sets have been repainted or not. When I use a bit of Novus 2 on them, often a fair bit of black residue comes off, more so then buffing the other colours. I was wondering if more black pigment was used in the manufacturing of the black plastic. Perhaps the painters just did a great job.
Is there a way to test if the plastic has been (re)painted. Preferably a non destructive test?

If a lot of black residue comes off when polishing, it's most likely painted. I have never had any pigment come off when polishing bare plastic. You can checks the inside of the housing in a very well hidden spot. If it feels rougher on a flat surface, then it's been painted.
