I was Watcher 2 in the counter, so I think I got this as it was just listed. It is in amazing condition, I just wiped off some dust. Off white cover is different. Handset does not have E1 on it but does have a 1922 Patent. Not as cool as a Strowger Stick for $150, but this is a really nice untouched phone as found in the wild.

I plugged it in and it works with the 4 prong. A little static as there is electric tape on the line cord. These bullet transmitters hardly ever work....Doug

Beautiful!

Congratulations on your quick work.

What's the model marking on the back of the stem?

not sure Benny, it is the way it was found with a Handset that was not labeled E1 and Patent date is 1922. I thought the A1 was made in 1925.

Hopefully someone will have more information on it..Doug

@paul-f's site (http://www.paul-f.com/weHandsets.html) shows a handset marking similar to yours but with the addition of "B 80370". Yours appears to have space for that marking but it is missing for some reason. It suggests it is a very early E type handset.

The first picture is from Paul's site.

1st The Old seamless E1s have the nine Line Label

2nd Is the D 80370 which is pre E1 with a 1922 patent applied for

My picture does Not have anything but the 1922 patent applied for

Is it older than the D number handset?...Doug

Thanks for the extra photos, Doug. Great find.

The text does seem to be identical, except for the D 80370. I understand the model number was often implemented using an insert in the die.

Without documentation, it's only speculation as to which came first. It's pretty safe to say that they were both about the same time.

The 1922 date is a patent date, not a production date, so would naturally be earlier. Are there dates or model numbers on the internal handset components or cords?

Paul...I have not tried to open the phone or the handset. The screws on the base are tight and I have damaged bakelite using the E1 tools in the past. At the moment, it doesn't need to be opened.

I didn't even try to remove a small mark of paint or scuff marks in the bakelite. You can see the difference in the amazing shine it has from my first manual A1.

The off white cover is sure a surprise, but looks exactly the same as the brown on my other set. Both are D 76869 on the perch

I don't need two manual sets, so I am deciding which to keep.

With your help, Janet got me the first one so.....

That's a dilemma most of us would love to have.

And, since you already have an A1 with #2 dial, there's no need to go there!

Paul,
How many different D#'s have you documented  for A1 mounts?
Your question makes me think that it is more than 1.
Just curious,
Jim

One D- number so far, but a few are marked with A codes (A1, A2, ...). I believe there's more to be learned.

Cool,
I am glad you maintain a database for research.
