I just realized that my WE 711B has a 14-conductor cord, yet it only has a 2 line switch and exclusion plunger, and no night light seems to have ever been originally installed. My 1515B, which has the same basic features as the 711B (except for the night light), only needs a four-conductor line cord. Why did my 711 need so many more conductors than any other similar model?

515B would have 6-conductor cord if the pushbutton signaling feature is used. (BSP 502-531-406 i4)

711B uses D14H or D14L mounting cord: (BSP 502-701-103, Issue 1)
For 2-line pickup,  exclusion on line 1, and Signaling, Dial Lamp = 10 leads used out of 14 possible
For 1-line pickup, cutoff feature for an ext. station or external line ringer, signaling, dial lamp= 8 leads used

If used behind a 1A1 or 1A2 Key System, then you need
For 2-line pickup, excl. on line 1, signaling, dial lamp= 13 leads of 14

(As shown for a 2712B in Section 502-703-101, issue 1, Fig. 6):

BL-W = Line 1 (Ring)

W-O = Excluded Station (Tip)
O-W = Excl. Sta. (Ring)

W-BR = Line 2 (Tip)
BR-W = Line 2 (Ring)

W-SL = A (or AG) lead for Excluded Station
SL-W = To Signal Ckt.

Y-G   = To Dial Light Transformer
G-Y   = To Dial Light Transformer

V-G  = To A1 ground
G-V  = * (SPARE)

V-S   = A (or AG) for Line 2
