New forum members are very welcome and encouraged to take a guess. After all, there are no wrong guesses, just one lucky one. No one knows the winning bid on any auction until it ends. However, it is important to get your guess in before someone else grabs your guess.

Listed about 4 days ago in a 7 day auction with no reserve and starting at $19.99 ( with thanks to HarrySmith for the listing tip ) is a unique clear phone, one rarely seen, in good condition based on the photos posted. HarrySmith added that while listed as a WE D1?, it is really an SC 1198, I have to take his word on that. He sent the link to me yesterday so as of this contest start, there are only 2 1/2 days to get your guesses in. While a short contest, there's plenty of time to guess and being a "rare" clear phone that has 6 bidders placing 18 bids as of this post, the price has been driven up to $126.00 and I'm sure it will go higher. The seller provided a good array of pictures. So, while the clear phone collectors await the final seconds, the question here is who best knows what the phone will sell for when the auction ends?

NOTE:  We will use a $5 gap rule between guesses to prevent crowding. As such, keep your guess at least $5 away from prior guesses for this contest. All guesses, original and a single allowed revised guess if needed, must be submitted at least 24 hours before the auction ends.

The seller listed it as an "RARE VINTAGE TELEPHONE CLEAR BAKELITE WESTERN ELECTRIC ? D-1 ? VISIBLE MECHANISM" with the item condition as "Used" and "No cracks to plastic body or handset plastic body has yellowed with age. I am told that the dial and bottom are not difficult pieces to locate they can be taken from a black telephone of the same model. You will need to complete this very rare telephone. It is being sold as is for restoration purposes" and with the auction listing description saying "Purchased this phone from an 87 year old gentleman yesterday at a garage sale this man worked for the telephone company as a designer for 35 years. I was told that this was a phone that was used in the offices as visible working demonstration model offered to employees. I cannot find any reference or photographic images and have shown this phone to a few people who have never seen one before. I will let ebay determine its rarity and value. If you have any knowledge of this clear model phone please do not hesitate to contact me so i can add it to the description."

Going to go with a real shot in the dark @ 480.00$

I doubt anyone knows what value the eBay market will put on this phone. Any person interested in buying it has an idea of what they would be willing to spend on it, and then probably double that by the time the auction ends. What that number is? That the fun of these contests.

$685 Wish I could afford it but then again if I had that kind of money it wouldn't be as much fun...

And the winner of Auction Contest #285 is zapper who with the 8th entry into the contest offered the winning guess of $729.00 giving him his 4th auction contest win. So a big congratulations goes out to zapper for another win in the CRPF Auction Contests and moving up one rung in the Contest Standings.

The phone was won by m***r ( 1557 ) who his first and only bid, a snipe placed just 5 seconds before the auction ended, to take the phone home for $721. That bid was the higher than the two other snipes placed within the last 8 seconds. The phone was listed at $19.99 and rose to the mid $120's in the first 4 days where it stayed until end time. Within the last few seconds, the price jumped about $600 making the seller happy, I would guess. The auction saw 10 buyers placing 23 bids.

Thanks again to all who played. As always, there is only one way to get on the winner's board or move up a rung - you have to play to win.
