SAMSON wet batteries are very common, and were used in a variety of applications, including old wooden wall telephones.  The were manufactured by the E.G.L. Co. of Boston.

The NOSMAS glass battery is a bit of a mystery.   It was also manufactured by the E.G.L. Co. of Boston.  NOSMAS is SAMSON spelled backwards.  I have seen this described as a manufacturing error, but then why would the top also say "NOSMAS"???

It might have been a mistake but they did sell it as a line of batteries. If enough of them were made it was probably easier and less costly to sell them than to destroy them. See entries from 2 different books found on GoogleBooks. One from 1913 and one from 1916.

In the 70's Datsun(Nissan) made a B210 car. They were unloading the transport ship in San Pedro, CA when they discovered that some how every one was the color yellow. They quickly came up with the idea of having a special car called the "Honey Bee" with special stickers and sold all of them.
Dave, who still needs a Transmitter Bracket for the Automatic Electric Type 38 Handset.

Within a year or so, all of them were rust colored.

The E.G.M. Co. or Electrical Goods Manufacturing Company, was located in Canton Mass.  (outside Boston) They were formerly the Samson Electric Company,  until 1904.1  They moved to Canton in 1907.  In 1916 they changed the name back to Samson.2 If this information is correct, that would date the battery from 1904-1907ish.Interestingly, they also manufactured watch case receivers for Western Electric as well as there own line of intercom telephones that used Western Electric parts3
