This looks like the prototype model that came after the Shmoo, called the "Contour".  This was a step closer to the Trimline.  It has the space-saver dial with the moving fingerstop.  This looks like a field trial model, it has a serial number, which means it should be a working model.

In this case, I suggest the wording "... which means it was probably once a working model."

I have seen too many field trial sets that have been gutted and used for later experiments or as displays in Bell System lobbies or Pioneer museums.  One set that was in a Pioneer auction last year had holes drilled in the handset and base so it could be mounted on a display board.

Since I don't trust what I can't see, I asked the seller to post internal photos of the base.  We'll see what happens.
