My Payphone Out Of Order Sign arrived in the mail today. I was happy to get it. I found it on Kijiji in an ad for rotary phones. I contacted them and they had said there was no interest in the sign, but lots on the phones which were just 500's. I jumped right on it. I believe it is an older sign as the drawing of the phone shows an older handset and the Z with the zero on the dial. 1940's possibly???
A search of the TCI library brings up several refrences. BSP C42.102 & 147 from 5/1953 & 11/1956 both reference KS-7991 out of order signs but do not have pictures. Several other BSP's from the 60's & 70's show pictures of the one you have.

Thanks Harry,
Good info. Feel free to add these pictures to the library if you like.

Hi Doug. You can get them from the TCI library. You do not need to be a member to use it, you can enter the BSP numbers in the search box or put the KS number in the Google search option as I did.
Here is a similar sign I used to have, I sold it a few years ago. The illustration on the back of this one appears to be newer.
Thanks zenithchromacolor,
Yes, that is the one like the pictures on TCI. 1967 was the oldest picture I seen. I hope TCI doesn't mind me using their picture for comparison.
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you get for it?

Doug,
I sold the sign on ebay in 2015 for $53, it went to a collector in Canada.

Maybe a silly question but....
Since it says "reverse this sign..." Does that mean these were in place on the phone all the time for use in the event of a break down by a user? Or did Bell and other companies just feel the need to explain everything in an almost painful level of detain to their own techs?

I got it, very nice. Haven't seen a sign like this before, it has no "SORRY" but that I have seen bevore, but it has a not bent metal fixture on the back, that is new to me.

Here are the pictures. Older sign for sure.
Thank you. Now I only have to wait about 10 days...patience is not my strongest point but I'll think have to.

Are you going to bid on the other one?
No I don't. One is enough for me (as I hope that I will never have more than one phone temporarily out of service here )
The oldest about those signs I found from 1958- with "SORRY":

Noticed something today- my sign does only fit for the old type of coin gauge, not on the later ones. So must be before they changed the design of the coin gauge. Wonder if the newer type of signs fit on bothe type of coin gauges, anybody knows?
