I came across this curious Butt Set. French (AE) dial on a F1W. If you look at the way it has been attached, the screws go straight through the wording on the handset.

It's the dial that interests me, but whole thing is curious. I don't think it would have been made like that originally? Why would anyone want to make one of these. Bizarre?

As ever, I am keen to learn. Your thoughts please. Take it, or leave it?   :)

They had the parts and no money for a nicer test set. What we refer to down south as red neck make do.

This type butt set was common in eastern europe.Old handsets with dial added.WE sid similar things during ww2 by taking old E1 handsets and adding dial cups

I have seen various home made butt sets over the years.
I think they were usually cobbled together by a telephone guy working for small Independents.
Why spend the money when you have all the spare parts to create your own.

I have an interesting one that was made out of an old   2 cell metal flashlight telephone parts and lots of solder. The cool thing is that it also has talk battery.

I like this type of thing and if it is cheap I buy them.

Probably what they used a long time ago before better butt sets were made.
