You are braver than I, but I understand the frustration of these things refusing to budge.

A strap wrench is my torque - if you haven't got a strap wrench they are worth the small investment. The grip pressure is fairly even around the outer of the endcap so reduces the firm pressure point fingers would give - so hopefully no unwanted 'snap'.
