This is a very cute toy intercom set.

When I was a kid it was all the girls that had 'em, I was jealous!

The bay threw this up as a suggestion, and for a 99p bid, a very nice suggestion.

I think you'll agree its a pretty nicely designed item.

Runs off PP9 (9V) batteries

"now this should take five minutes, where's me screwdriver went now..?"

The question is, how far can you extend the wire before they stop working? ;D

Well, 2CV, the seller stated in the description that he powered them up but could only hear anything but a high pitched whining noise.

I'm guessing audio feedback!

They probably need the WE G3 technique of stuffing some cotton into the handle of the handsets... ;D

I put the PP9's in em 2CV, they just wail, even when not connected, seems the seller was right!

How hard is this going to be to fix?

There is no TX in the handsets, so must be a phonic scoop design like a Trimphone.

Another couple of basket cases for my collection!

If it's got an electronic amplifier inside each unit, I'd be willing to bet there's some failed components (probably capacitors), I can only guess though, toy intercoms aren't my thing, I've got grown up ex-army intercoms... ;D
