This had all the outside casing just falling away. After I removed it (quite easily) this beauty was underneath. Colors vibrant and in perfect condition.

Fully spaded and working subset cord!

You just never know....Doug

Strange that the wires are still good.  Maybe cloth covered wires are the long-lasting ones?
