How common are these Kellogg model 500 clones. When were they made. The seller says it's a 50's model.

Doug;
Thanks, I thought it was uncommon, but didn't know exactly when it was made. I went to the Kellogg archives and downloaded a pdf file that lauds how the design is superior to other phones, and a great improvement. If you look at the PDF it matches WE dersign to a tee.
That should satisfy those that wonder which design is better Kellogg, or WE, as Kellogg says the WE design is superior.

Here is the link to the pdf.

I have never come across a banjo in the wild, and I have only seen a few at shows. It is worth keeping.

Anyone want to bet a 500 shell fits it perfectly ?
I had not seen one before myself, and It said in great condition, has a modular adapter installed and works great.  I paid $33.00 for it.

When was the earliest W.E. license for the 500 design authorised by W.E. ?

I am thinking  the 1956 consent decree opened up the design for copying.

Dan, I posted an article on my blog about the DK500 back in January.  I was lucky enough to pick up one in color---it's yellow.  I also have one in Green but it has a hole in the side where someone decided to pop-rivet a switch into it.  Here's the link to the article/photos.

"Old-Time Telephones!" references an article in Telephony magazine dating the cross-licensing patent agreement at June 7, 1951.

Dan, I have recently seen them end on eBay as low as $30-35 and as high as $135.00...the black ones.

This one looks like yours, maybe??

Out of Nebraska?  That wasn't a bad price for a nice soft plastic Banjo phone.  Hopefully the ringer is not a frequency ringer.

D/P,

You got a beautiful phone for a good price.  I have been trying to get one.

According to writing on the bottom of the phone....

MK-500-BA-(2)
The phone cam,e equiped as follows.
MK---Manual kellogg, DK---Means Dial Kellogg.
So I assume it means originally my phone did not have a dial..
500---500 style phone.
BA--Polarized or Non Polarized ringing, not a frequency ringer.
(2)--Coiled handset cord.

It appears someone added the dial. I have a sick feeling I'm going to get a Kellogg phone with a W.E. dial.
