The 4014 "Big Boy" is a massive locomotive, virtually 2 in one. It was recently restored from a display engine.

Great to see these old engines back in service! We continue to move away from machinery that seems alive - lots of noise, personality, maintenance and, unfortunately, emissions. But those awesome machines need to be preserved as living history.. Thanks for posting!

I was watching trains on you tube the other day, and saw that video come up. Those were monster machines, it must have been a huge undertaking to get that fully functional again.
Bet it was like our phones though, a labor of love. :)
I'm a huge fan of Trains. I collect and restore old Marx trains.

Here it is moving north through Utah and into Wyoming. Some good detail shots and it cuts loose with the whistle around 5.46.

Here is a Union Pacific promo film showing the development of the Big Boy Locomotives and some color footage of them in service. They mention that one of them could draw a train of 5 1/2 miles.
