Title: Factory Painted Ivory Northern Electric 1942
Post by: Doug Rose on June 01, 2013, 08:31:49 PM
I won this while I was away from Jon Kolger on eBay. Beautiful factory painted Ivory NORTHERN Electric. This is really in wonderful condition with minor paint loss. Metal Northerns are a tough find let alone a factory paint. I was surprised it went so low....Doug

Yes, that phone is in really good condition and has a brown Bakelite handset. Only problem is the WE dial.

David....I tried and tried and could not read the inside of the dial, whether its a Northern or a Western. You have better eyesight than I do. ...Doug

I was kind of shocked it went for what it did but you got a great deal.

I'm judging by the finger stop and the fact that the date is in red, not black. I can barely read the computer screen with or without glasses, so no, I didn't read the manufacturer name.

thanks Mike.....I am more than happy with it at a super price. For those of you who have not been in the ATCA at one time. Jon Kolger has a wonderful collection including many hard to find color phones. He is also a great guy...Doug

I received my Ivory Northern 302 today. It is much better in person than the pictures show. I had an Ivory WE slip through my hands a few years ago from a town one over from me; that someone on the Forum got. This made it well worth the wait. Along with Jon, I am shocked that this beauty feel through the cracks. All dates match with only minor signs of use. Factory color painted phones in good display shape are few and far between. This is a beauty...Doug

Who would have done a thing like that?

Larry...you were faster than I was and you certainly deserved it. I am more than happy with my Northern, so we are both winners...Doug

I have been in contact with an old timer (like myself) who seems to know a lot about early WE phones. He is under the impression that this in not Ivory, but yellow. Yellow! He knows WE started making thermoplastic phones in 1941 and the first thermoplastic production was 3/42. He also knew that WE was making Ivory thermoplastic sets in 1942.

His question to me was "why would they paint a metal set Ivory, when they were producing Ivory thermoplastic sets?"

He states mine is 70+ year old yellow paint and not Ivory. He said it didn't matter that its a NE, he really felt it was yellow and felt strongly WE made painted special order yellow sets and it was not a success so they never made a yellow thermoplastic.

Side by side with a Ivory thermoplastic, it sure does look like a deep yellow. He makes some very good arguments. Your thoughts?...Doug

Mental Health Day and I was dusting my collection, no small feat. It took all morning!! While dusting I stopped again at this beauty. It sure looks yellow to me, especially next to my Ivory thermoplastic.

Anyone have any thoughts on this....Doug
