Removing Chrome Plate from phone

Has anyone ever tried removing Chrome plate from a phone. I came across a real nice Western Electric B1 that had the base of the phone plated. The plate is in poor condition and I'd like to try to remove it and save the phone. Any Ideas?....thanks....Doug
