Why Collect Tools?

Earlier versions of the KS16750 tool did not have a stepped shaft.  Here is the L1.

Now, that poses a question... I wonder what if anything the thicker step of the L4 was used for... I notice the L1's shaft appears to be about the length of the thinner step of the L4's shaft, so they must have modified it for a reason?

Dave,

It may be that people were damaging the spider by pushing the L1 in too far, so later versions included the step to prevent this.  These tools are all an evolution, and you would expect the later "L"s to incorporate any improvements that might have been thought of.
