Need help with a WE 554 wall phone

     Hi,

     Its been a while sense I've posted.
     I installed a WE 554 in my shop the other day and
     am having a problem with it. The phone will not
     transmit. It will ring out and ring in and I can hear
     the party on the other end but they can't hear me.
     The transmitter in the handset is good. I have tested
     it in another phone. (WE 500)
     The 554 has a 425E network in it, dated 7-71.
     I have Red to L2 and Green to L1 and Yellow and Black
     tapped off.
     The phone uses all modular plugs.
     Is there something else I need to do or do I have a bad
     network?

Is your 500 modular? If so, borrow the handset cord from that phone, and test the 554 with that borrowed cord. If it is now working, the original cord is probably bad on your 554. If still not working, borrow the handset from the 500 and try the 554 with both the borrowed cord and the borrowed handset. This will narrow down the possible causes.
Possible problems:

Contact springs not pushed up high enough to make contact with transmitter, or bent out of line.

Miswired (red handset wire should be on R, black on B).

Open in handset cord or in the clear modular plug(s) on either end of cord.

Open or bent pins in modular jack either inside the handset or inside the phone.

Open connection on spade tips (red and black wires inside phone or inside handset); or red and black leads not connected to terminals on back of transmitter cup.

     handset cord. I tend to over look the
     most obvious things. Never thought
     about the cord.
