I have a GPO 332L coming to me from Carrickfegus, Ireland.   My wife is over there visiting her sister. My brother in-law gave it to me for my collection. My wife will bring it home.

This is what it say's on the paper beside the phone. Anyone know what it means?

GPO FDI

Doug   ....   Here's a link to a British web site called Britishtelephones.com, that will provide you with some information on the set.     GPO stands for "General Post Office" .    Here's the link :

http://www.britishtelephones.com/t332.htm     The set will be a nice one to have, since came from a family member.

332L > type
Marks 1 2 2A > See Jeff's link
GPO FDI > What is FDI?
Batch Stamped > Should that not be Batch Sampled? I took it to mean that full quality controll was only done on samples, not on the whole batch?
FWR 65/2  > FWR is a refurbishment facility? Which one? 65/2 = refurb date
No Drawer > means that it has no drawer. Some versions have a drawer. Yours has a drawer blank at the front.

Nice phone, great gift!

Thanks Jeff and Arwin,

That information helps. Now to find out the year it was made. 65/2 = refurbished date as Arwin says. I will have the phone in my hands on the 20th when my wife arrives home. My first British Telephone.

Refurbishment practices differ, but here in the Netherlands handsets, dials, body shells and innards were seperated and after cleaning and technical testing, reassembled. So you get a mixture of production dates of the various components.

It may be different in the UK though.

By the way, here are some pics of a version that has a drawer.

Thanks. I restored it, but had to send it back to the owner. Unfortunately. :-)

FWR = Factory Wales Refurbishment. It is a GPO factory in Cwmcarn, Wales.

332L is a model 332 with a lettered dial. One with a numbers only dial would be a 332F (figures).

Thanks Jack,

It's all coming together and it hasn't even left Ireland yet.  :)

Sweet phone!  I'm jealous.  :P  This is one of the last phones that I would really like to collect.  Someday.  It looks like the more recent #12 dial.  Enjoy it!

Let's hope it doesn't "all come apart" once it leaves Ireland!!

Tell her to really wrap it up well in the very middle of her suitcase. They are fragile Bakelite.

The No 12 dial was current when the phone was refurbished so it is likely that is when it was changed.

My phone arrived home from Ireland yesterday. My wife had it packed safely in her suitcase for the flight. It made it through Canada Customs ok.

Looks good to start off.

Very nice looking phone, Autonut! Can't wait to see it cleaned up and hear details on it's condition.
