That was interesting and entertaining. Looking at all those parts laid out was something else.

But when he put the dial back together, he did forget one thing, lubrication.

I captured the sound and got the dialing speeds. With just the governor on, the dial speed without any lubrication was about 9.1 PPS. Once the pulse contacts and everything else was in place, the extra friction dropped the dial speed to about 8.3 PPS. If the GPO used those speeds, then all is well without oil/grease. Over time, without lubrication, it may get even slower.

When back together, he plugged it into a POTS line and it rang when called. But, he never answered it to test the talk circuit and he did not try to dial out to see if the pulses he generated would be accepted by the CO.

Still, very interesting to watch. Thanks for posting the link.

The series is called 'The Reassembler'. James takes everyday objects, strips them down and rebuilds.

(there is a guitar strip/rebuild on one of the episodes too - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1OfGrol1IU)

That works, thanks.

A British video that is restricted to the US - someone must have their publishing settings wrong.

That one works here in Australia as well. When the original was posted - was it BBC? - it did not work here either.

There are several episodes of "The Reassembler" on youtube that play without issues. I think someone is being over cautious about copyright.

Jack,
glad to hear that link is working for you over there in Aus.
That's a very interesting series...I was impressed by the "Grab-it" screwdriver in this episode.

If anyone has an is interested in buying them, they are available, new, for about $10-12 each with shipping and used ones show up on eBay at times for under $10 each. Most likely available from other sources as well.

I bought those screwdrivers. Maybe it is just me but I could not get it to work on any of the small telephone screws I wanted it for. I have a different one leftover from my mechanic days that works well but not on small screws:

The original publication worked here. I think the subsequent publications on youtube were just broken.

I had seen those screwdrivers before but they are evidently not popular here. I can get the Klein sets from the US on eBay and Amazon but they are quite expensive.

There is a Phillips version as well.
