I thought this was an interesting aftermarket device for cord management. Something I have never seen before.

Actually, that's the second time I've seen it.  The first time I saw it, it was on an AE phone.

I would think when the spring wire coil was made or first used, it was considered to be a short term use item, for the normal life time of that particular phone type or style - say 10 years or so.

It would seem no one expected it to still be in existence some 75 years, during which time the metal pressure points on the cloth covering would tend to wear a hole in the cloth, especially as the cloth itself started to deteriorate with age.

Frayed cloth is seen at the lower right end of the spring coil.

I see the fraying.... it would lend an interesting aspect to a display phone in one's collection.
