I really like the way these two look together. If I remember right, these two were actually meant to be for a while? Until the newer handsets came into mass circulation? Ma Bell using her old parts?

The early 302's from 1937 were equipped with the E handset. The F came later in the year.

E-1's do look really cool on a 302...

Now I know what I can do with my extra E-1 handset.

I just recently took some nice pictures of a 302 with E1 handset.

I didn't realize the dirt in the handset groove until after :(

They experimented with several set-ups on the small plunger 302's including E handsets and multi-part F styles.
Here is a chart from Hal Beldon ( The link is from Paul F.)

I have seen a small plunger set with a "F" looking handset from 1936. The interesting thing about the handset was it came apart like an E handset.

I have a theory that the bases of the clear 302's used in the Worlds Fair were variations of this chart.
My guess is Bell Labs tested all parts of the phone every night after close and logged the results.
I think the results influenced the final  design of the standard production model.

Just my Guess,
