So I want a speakerphone. I have a 107a speaker. Seems I need a transformer and control unit. How hard is that stuff to find? And do I have to have a special 500 set, or can I just use any old 500?

I would look at a bsp from  the TCI library to see what parts are need for a the speaker phone type that you are trying to build.

If you check Paul F.' site you can see which 500 sets were intended for speaker phone use.

The easy way is to buy a complete setup.

Speakerphones require a set of switchhook contacts for control.

Many of the BSPs for the 4A are in section 512-7  (first four digits of a 9-digit BSP number). They show sets that are intended for the 4A and include wiring diagrams.

A quick way to find a list of compatible sets is to look in the index for division 512, which is coded 512-000-000. There are several issues from different dates in the TCI Library.

Here's a search string to get you started:  https://www.telephonecollectors.info/index.php/search?q=512+000+000
