AT&T Diathermy Machine

Diathermy was a therapy that used short wave radio transmissions to produce heat in body tissue.  It was used in physical therapy and other medical applications.  Why would AT&T need a diathermy machine?

Why do you assume that they needed one?

The plate only states that a patent of AT&T/WECo was used for manufacture.
Bell Labs and Western Electric invented many of the early radio wave systems or generators.

AT&T didn't but it did wonders for Alex Bells bursitis.

Actually the Feds required AT&T and other members of the tube consortium (GE, RCA, Westinghouse) to license their patents to others in order to not maintain a monopoly.
