Title: AE 3 Slot or Decorator Phone?
Post by: FABphones on October 12, 2018, 04:34:08 PM
The search continues. I'm considering this one.

I freely admit, I know nothing about payphones. What am I looking at in here?

Thanks for any guidance.

I am no payphone expert either but from the ringer in the vault and the wiring I would guess it was converted by someone. Does not look like a factory "decorator" conversion to me.

The wiring harness  looks intact for an LPB series paystation. That ringer could be removed .You will need a vault door and lock, coin relay if you wanted to restore it and an AE type 81 handset.Set appears to have a G type handset

@FabPhones - we seem to be good a watching the same things on eBay.
I must admit that I was hoping this one would slip through unseen, but clearly not.

I've often wondered how often that happens.

I zoomed in on the pic, the vault door in the photo looks like a piece of hardboard cut to fit the hole? (seller says no keys). Are the parts you mention / vault doors, keys difficult to find? (any parts needed would have to be sourced from your side of the pond).

Thanks.

We might have been if the price had stayed low enough.
I think it's still at a fair price, but it's too much for me right now.
Good luck!

Next question - is a dial card opal from a W.E. the same as a A.E.
If so would it fit this A.E. dial centre?

@FABPhones would I be right in assuming that you won it?

AE dial number cards and frames will not interchange between dials.Make sure that the assy that is for sale will fit the AE fingerwheel you have

Ah ok, thanks for that.

This is now on its way to me from Germany. Cost was $230 including shipping (bought for me as a gift). I don't know if that price is good or not?

We can't get these as easily as you can over there, 99% of the few I see are mostly empty aside from a wired PCB. I wanted one as complete as possible, hopefully this one won't need too much.

So, I guess a good place to start re tidying this up is to begin looking for a vault door and keys (if anyone has one please message me). Vault doors for 3 slot A.E / W.E are the same?

This is going to be a bit of a learning curve for me.... I've never actually seen one apart from in a photo....

Any pointers, tips and advice will be gratefully received.

I will definitely be needing a vault door and key/s, if anyone can point me in the right direction please. The door on it at the moment is 'repro' metal, held on with a spring.

A few on eBay, but all silly prices. Can't decide whether to get the inner coin box too.

What is this (photo 1, centre right)?
This is not on my phone (photo 3), should it have this?

Anything else on photo 1 /2 phone that should be on photo 3 phone?
Go on - all of it?  Oh dear...  ::)

Thanks.

The more I learn the less I know.... I think I should have walked away from this one....
....too late now, I will just have to somehow make good.

So... trying to make some sense of this - in answer to my previous question, is it/anything to do with the coin relay? And if it is (warning, am about to get technical here) - what is the possibly metal thingy that is missing from pic on first post in this thread, centre bottom, front, looks like it might have something to do with the (hopper?) drop into coin bucket area (because I thought that was the coin relay)?

Guys - save me. Don't suppose there is a photo someplace for comparison, with indicator arrows that point to the internals and list what they are called?

That is a 2 nickel relay.this is used in paystations that need 10 cents to make a call. You put in one nickel to lock the latch and a 2nd nickel to release the latch. This is needed to prevent one nickel from allowing you to make a call on a 10 cent paystation. Not found on paystations that are set up for 5 cent service. I would not worry about this

rdelius, thank you so much for your help on this thread. I won't be chasing one of those up then. Thank goodness, one less replacement part to find.

Was that a later adaptation, or were they on different models?

When the price of a telephone call went up from 5 cents to 10 cents, this nickel relay was added. No set date because local regulators set rates.

It has arrived.

The handset is ITT.

The sticker from centre of dial was removed prior to sending, as I have never seen one of these before could someone please tell me, re the centre dial card - does it fit behind the fingerplate or in front under an opal, this has none (apol for using UK terminology).

Also, unfortunately the plaque from the top is missing so I have no idea what model or approx age this phone is. Can anyone give me a rough idea?

Thanks again.

The handset needed is an AE type 81 or 810 used on many different telephone sets .It is unmarked and the handle has a ridge down the handle.Possiblv an Italian AE might be the same. The missing data tag might be marked LPB 82 for your set. These sets were in production from the late 50s to the early 70s .The number card works like the older  metal French one but is smaller.Didnt you buy a Conn  tp6A set? . It would be the same assy.
