I was working on restoring a WE 304 phone when I came across the following transmitter element.

This element is dated 12/35.  That would pre-date the 302's by a year or two.  I know that the D1/202's also used an F1 handset.  Dumb question, but when did the F1 handset first appear ?

This transmitter element seems different from later elements as it is flatter.  Another interesting thing is that there are no other "refurbish" dates on the element, so that it is an "original" unrestored 1935 element.

I think that is kind of cool.

The handset is a solid one, with no wires running through the barrel.  Perhaps not uncommon, but less common than the ones with the removable wires.

Nice Find!!

The F1 Capsule was

  • available in 1934
  • integrated into the E handsets in 1935 and
  • available in the F1 handset in either 1936 or 37 (depending on who you listen to).

Thanks Paul,

I did not know that [which is why I asked].

I think I will keep this one around and replace the element with one from the 40's before I ship the phone out.

In comparing this to later f1 elements, this one has a flat back rather than the radial ridges of the ones I have seen from the 40's and 50's

I think someone posted an F-1 capsule with a 1934 date several months ago.

I have one like yours that I use in my E1/D-1 phone.  It's dated once: 10/36.
