Have you wound both springs? one is a dedicated chime mechanism spring.

Maybe someone got tired of hearing it chime -- like the ringers we find with masking tape, cotton, etc.

My grandfather got tired of hearing the clock ticking in the dining room. So, he moved the works to the other side of the wall -- in the hall -- and put extensions so that the face and hands only were in the dining room.

What is the rod running across the bottom? is it possible that that is a chime that is pulled up and struck by the edge of the pendulum?

Post you question and pictures to the NAWCC Forum (National Association of Watch and Cllock Collectors). You don't have to be a NAWCC member to post. That's where the clock experts are and I always get a good answer when I post a question.
