With north american type telephones, I never bother trying to wire it up so that they use the master socket's capacitor, as the networks in the phones have them built in already it seems pointless, and they always work fine as two wire, bridged ringing phones... :)

I never realised that Eircom went for a Master socket setup though, I thought they used a north american style system... ???

Problem solved after a bit of work! Thank you G-man. I connected the master socket to the mainline, bridging the wire as per the diagram, but got a busy line tone. I was puzzled and tried a different socket that I had. This worked perfect but this time I only connected the L1 and L2 wires to the main socket and plugged in the telephone. It worked perfect. So after months of being puzzled and not being able to figure out what was wrong I am sorted. Thank you to everyone that helped me out and posted suggestions and went to the trouble to research online.
