Working WE 302 but what the heck is this?

in anothr purchase fro NH Telephone museum, I got an unmarked 302 that works when connected to a line , but upon opening it.... This oddity was foiund. What is it?

RFI Filter...so your phone didn't pickup radio station. Won't hurt anything to leave it or remove. I like to leave them to keep it as original as possible,,,, Doug
