Here is an interesting AT&T brochure which extols the virtue of long distance telephone.  Note that the Blue Bell does not say "Local and".   You can see a rusty outline of an old paperclip on one of the scans:

I have seen some of these images before, I think Ron K. Payphone book has some, so it doesn't surprise me.
