Title: Blue and Ivory Kellogg 1000
Post by: LarryInMichigan on November 03, 2017, 05:47:25 PM
I just received this: ebay link (https://www.ebay.com/itm/172944979118).  The ringer and transmitter are missing, but I haven't had time yet to investigate it further.  The seller took about six days to ship it, packed it very poorly, and overcharged me for shipping.  This is most probably the only blue Kellogg 1000 I have ever seen.

No, the phone is blue and ivory plastic with no paint (only some dirt).

Very nice, Larry.

I have vague memories of seeing a blue set at a phone show many, many years ago.  They're certainly scarce.

Even if nothing is inside, you have the important parts!

Seen from here (Norway) Kellogg has always had their special solutions,  -  in design, and in circuits.  I guess that was a way to get their own customers, and keep them.  When you first fall for it, you will stick to them. (Maybe the same as IPhone on cellphones today??)

When you have time, please tell us about whats inside, if I remember right the Redbar could have pretty many different plugin modules and schematic's, and I am always curious about how things may be used on a regular network.

Larry....do you think the cracks are from shrinkage or being dropped? Looks lit it will display great from the front on a shelf.  The black marks should brasso right off. Really a great combination with the Blue and Ivory. The Ivory handset alone is worth the $50.....nice hit...Doug

I just got back my internet access after a nightmare with my large oak tree which fell (thanks to DTE Energy) onto my house yesterday and took the power and internet lines with it in the process.  I am looking at probably $3000 of repairs now.  I did do a bit of work in this phone by candlelight.  It looks like it might not have ever been in service.  There may not have ever been a ringer in it.

The damage in the back corner almost certainly came fro a fall, and I think that at least one of the cracks probably came about from a combination of shrinkage of the shell and the impact of landing on a floor.  The shell is fairly thick plaskon.  I hope to post some more pictures in the next day or two.

a nice find larry..... i've never seen a blue redbar before. it's fortunate that the worst of the damage is in the back. good luck with fixing that.

sorry to hear about the falling tree......hope no-one was hurt. will you get any compensation from the power co. as they were at fault?

I just reassembled the phone and, a I took some pictures.  Nobody was hurt, but I have to find someone to fix the damage to the house urgently now.  There is about a 0% chance of getting any compensation from the utility company.  I am also concerned about whatever damage there is to the neighbors' property.  I am not on good terms at all with them as they are very inconsiderate people.

Here are some pictures of the reassembled phone.  It is mostly in great condition, but there are some stress cracks and discoloration on the handset.  There is no evidence that the phone was ever used.  The shell and handset are plaskon.

That sure looks pretty. Very nice phone. The colors and the shape really work well together to make it something special.

Are you going to place a patch across the crack on the inside to keep it from expanding?

I can think of a few ways I've seen the radio cabinet restoration guys do this to both reinforce crack patches and/or just to provide more support so the crack does not expand.

I normally spread a generous amount of super glue over cracks on the inside, and that seems to work.

I am curious about the color combination.  Did the phone leave the Kellogg factory this way, or did a local telco, or perhaps a collector, combine blue and ivory parts?

The powder blue color of the shell is the best color of any phone in my collection.  It is an awful shame that a chunk is missing on the bottom edge.  Judging by the location and shape of the damage, I am confident that the damage was done by a genius trying to pry the shell off of the base with a screwdriver.  They could have at least glued back the broken pieces.

I have been using the phone as my working desk phone for now.  I might have a spare SL ringer somewhere in my mess, but I haven't found it yet, so the phone is still ringerless, as I expect it has always been.  There are no markings from where a ringer would have been attached.  I could add a dial, but the beautiful ivory plaskon blank with the pristine card and card retainer looks too good to remove.

I would of suspected a "clear bar" plunger on this set. Great find
