I had never seen this type of sign before, with the 1921 Bell surrounded by "PUBLIC TELEPHONE".    I have seen "hubcaps" with this pattern but never a square version.  Measures 11" x 11"

I have one of those too, with the 1939 bell, but notice this one has the 1921 bell with embossed lettering.  It has no model number, but it is stamped "TELCO PROPERTY" in green, as on some old subsets etc.

No problem.

Here is another "hillbilly practice target" I picked up recently that I cannot find another example of, this time with the 08' pattern bell in a style you would expect to have the '21 bell:

The paint on the front is good with the exception of the "2x2" damaged area in the center (pretty good aim)and the edges.  The problem is that there is a layer of brown haze covering the sign that disappears when damp but reappears once dry.  Does anyone know what it is?  Oxidization?  Tree sap... pond scum?  Any tips for removing it?

The term UNIVERSIAL SERVICE was only used for a short time on signs thus signs with that motto are scarce. The one pictured is in my collection and is one of my favorites. Tom

That's a tough sign to find especially in bright and shiny (no fading)  excellent condition. Nice find! Tom

Thanks, I thought it was an interesting sign.

I am thinking of having one side of the "Universal Service" Sign restored

Notice that the Bell in the eBay sign is thinner at the top.

Yes, it is a little more stylized at the top too.
