I've been working on this restore, I was able to finish it today (I sent out the base to Dennis Hallworth so he could recover the feet)  the base came today in the mail, thank you Dennis you did a great job on the feet. The shell was powder coated a med. gloss black,  I placed a E1 handset  on it, I think the E1 looks good on top the 1937 302, and I replaced the coiled black handset cord with a brown cloth cord taken from a 1936 202. I wanted to have all the parts of the phone to be dated late 1936 to April 1937, because the phone is dated April 1937.  I am very happy with the results.

WOW, Scot!

The '37 came out great(!!!), as is always the case with your restorations! 8)

Just wish I had taken the precaution to don a 'Depends', before clicking on this topic... ;)

Enjoy your bee-yoo-tee-full '37!

Best regards!

Scot....it is beautiful! What month is it? It has the grate and the riveted feet, but the ears and plungers are the next genration. There were many changes as the '37 302 evolved....breath taking!....Doug

Thanks everyone for the kind words.
Doug the telephone is dated April 1937, it must be the angle of the pictures, it dose have the small plungers and the short ears along with the wide cradle. Here are some better pictures.

Looks great.  How did the H-1 stamp hold up under the powdercoating?

Thanks everyone, Sargeguy the H-1 stamp was pretty much covered, you can tell its there, but very hard to see, one of the down falls from powder coating.

I'm thinking of having one of my later 302s done-I wouldn't need to worry about the markings.

Not having had it done, I was curious... could not one utilize electrical tape over the vermillion, and preserve the marking? Please excuse my ignorance, but losing the markings would be a deal breaker for me powder coating some of my metal 302s...

Powder coaters have their own masking tapes (as well as hole plugs and caps) that they use. You just need to talk to them in detail about what needs to be protected from coating. If the person you talk to is not the person going to do the actual work, or not going to do it right away, make sure he writes it down, and read what he wrote to be sure he didn't miss anything.

BTW, as such an early phone, I believe the marking in question is probably punched into the metal (barely visible in photo P1010070.JPG) rather than ink-stamped.

I am restoring another 1937 302 the paint on it is in bad shape, so I will be powder coating it. I'll have to try to protect the H-1 stamp and see how it comes out.
