Time to retroactively vote for the "Find of the YEAR - 2012".

It took us awhile to get the "Find of the YEAR" contests going and then a trophy designed for the winner. We had a successful "Find of the YEAR - 2013" contest with "paul f" ultimately hauling the trophy home to sit by his (sort of) Clear AE 34. We are now ready to organize contests for previous years beginning with 2012'.

Take a few minutes to go through the list below. John "TelePlay" has created one post per entrant along with brief details, a link to the original nomination and the seperate topic on CRPF if there was one, and one picture of each contestant. The pictures are from the Photobucket site that John "TelePlay" maintains of all Find of the Month winners as well as the winners of the "Auction Contests".

This time there are twelve contestants to choose from so lets again do THREE VOTES EACH and see who wins the "Find of the YEAR - 2012".

If you inadvertently vote for less than three contestants, click the "delete vote" button at the bottom left of poll and vote again.

Dave posted this about it:

I have been looking for a Model 14 at an affordable price for a very long time - over 20 years.

The lock (which was sitting loose inside the coin box without a key) is on its way back now from Jody Haralson, along with two keys, and the missing side candlestick support has been received and replaced. The lock and keys are back now, after being re-keyed by Jody, and the scarce 1909 coin collector is now complete!

Not that I am going to sell it (not a chance), but when done, it would bring an easy $500 to $700. Not bad for a $75 investment and a bit of TLC.

This is a new photo - you can see an earlier one taken earlier in the clean-up process at:

So today, I went to a new antique store I'd never been to before. I could smell it from outside, a Yellow WE500 Soft Plastic in pretty good condition. I look at the price tag and it reads "Yellow Rotary Phone ONLY FOR PARTS OR PROP" I asked the lady who worked there why it was marked that, she said to me it was because the cord wouldn't work with a modern wall jack...

It looks like it's pretty much all there too, I haven't really found mix-matched parts yet. It's a great phone, and I'm looking forward to cleaning it up, and using it. And About that handset cord it's cut up a little bit, I think I might just get another one? I don't think it could be fixed... Anyone have one they'd give up? I also am having a hard time finding a new finger wheel for it, mines broken pretty bad, and it's the raised hollow front type. There is one thing though that isn't quite right with it, it's dial makes a strange noise when you turn it over, I took it off the brackets and flipped the dial upside down and it stopped making the noise so I think something might be loose in it? I might make another post for the dial in the troubleshooting section to try and figure it out. And also does anyone have anymore info on the phone for me, like I've said before I'm fairly new to all of this. I've heard that the soft shells are not very common, and the yellow might make it a little more uncommon. I've tried to look for prices on soft plastic 500's and I couldn't really find anything, anyone have an idea of what it might be worth? I'm hoping my $5 dollar investment into my "parts" phone was a good one.

Okay, here is my Newbie submission.  My wife is an avid FreeCycle and CraigsList (free items) "shopper".  She doesn't always tell me when she spots something she simply can't live without, I suppose to avoid my usual, "What are we going to do with THAT." response.  Anyway, she saw an ad saying, "Moving out, everything's up for grabs, for free." and off she went.  She was late to the party but she did learn that the original owner of the home, an avid phone collector, had died and he estate was cleaning things out.  In the garage she spotted a cool looking old phone and she snatched it up - ignoring, unfortunately, the many more phones also in there that she could have had.

We are now the proud owners of this AE34 in original used condition and in need of only a little cleaning, a bit of polishing, a smidgen of repair to a very small chip on the lip of the mouthpiece, and a proper handset cord.  All in due time.  This phone is fully functional and after only a little air to blow out the spider webs, gluing the inside fabric screens back in, cleaning and lubing the governor, and putting on a modular plug - I dialed my father-in-law (an 84 year old retired Ma Bell installer) and we talked on this lovely machine as I told him all about it.  The sound is very nice and the ring is absolutely a pleasure to listen to.  The hefty handset is the source of new-found arm-strength as well.

Terry posted this about it:

. . . my "Find of the Day" here. An AE #2 with real nice bakelite and though it isn't gold trim but rather polished and lacquered brass, it is very nicely done. Also the phone is gutted inside, no induction coil, capacitor, terminal strip or ringer in it. AND, the cradle is one of the PhoneCo reproduction Monophone cradles. I had never seen one of them up close before and they are quite nicely done, other than the use of Phillips screws inside. So I guess I am in the market for a smashed AE #2 for parts now unless I can put it together from other parts around here. Probably no point in trying to make it authentic considering the parts it is missing and the repro cradle.

I got it for free from a phone collector friend that I had lunch with today.

I'll start this month with this exceptional deal. $2.50 total from a flea market stand. Pictures are as received, no cleaning or polishing. Handset cord seems to be newer. Black cloth line cord seems original but needs to be replaced. Plugged the modular plug into my TelTone. Got a dial tone. Dialed out just fine and rang when dialed. Only defects are the deteriorated base gasket and worn line cord.

I will nominate myself for the Western Electric Interphone system I purchased at an estate sale this past Friday.

I boxed everything up and will clean and polish the components as time permits. My main concern is how to remove the paint from the 759A covers without removing the gaskets?? attached to them. Will probably be a project over the winter.  While waiting to go in to the sale I met a neighbor of the family and he told me her niece sold all the antiques and took everything of value (there was a 1960 Thunderbird) before the sale opened. The prices on the remaining items were cheap as they wanted to clean out the house.  I bought the phones , components and 1,700 35MM slides for $20.00.

This was a once in a lifetime purchase.  My knowledge of the inter phone system came from the Rotary Forum.

This week is the week a year ago I came across my first telephone that I found in the trash, my 1937 302 (still my favorite phone). Was out for a run, found this phone in the trash along with a Dumont tv set and tons of other items. Come to find out the owners of the house was getting rid of everything in the house, the guy that lived there had passed away and his son was cleaning up the house to put it on the market. He told me the phone was sitting on the desk in the hall for the last 65 years, it was still plugged into the wall he said the cut the wires. I asked him if I could have it, he said sure he was just gonna put it in trash. So I'm looking for some info on this phone, I did some searching on the web and found out its a we 302, but that's all I know.....please help if you can thanks

OK, you guys probably won't believe this one, but here it is: My "October 2012" find of the month . After I put my camera back in the truck, I found 3 - WE 2-boxers (with pony rcvrs), and a few more payphones. It will be easily 3 pick-up trucks full. I have been working on this elderly gentleman (92 yrs old) since 2003 when I met him. At that time, he stated that he had "100's of old phones", but would never elaborate OR let me see them! He told me also that he had an old wooden payphone too that took Silver Dollars, and he "knew" that it was worth more than the $500 that someone offered him for it back in the 1980's. So, a couple of times a year, I "bug" him about making the trip to his place to see his phones. Well, 9 yrs later, he actually gave me a call!  You could have knocked me over with a feather!

Needless to say, yes I also saw the Silver Dollar paystation there, and it's a No. 2 Gray in black walnut, and it needs some work, but seems to be all there. As for the other stuff, oddly, it seems to be primarily desk sets with (attached/original) magneto boxes. I wanted to look through that pile of 102's & 202's, because I was almost sure that I saw an AA1 or several in there, but I didn't get to spend too much time looking because he was taking me on a "tour" of the facilities. I think I counted 4 or 5 cord boards, and a couple of those small AE PBX boards too. Also a couple of REALLY old tone generators and other stuff from an OLD central office.

I would like to take a shot at Find of the Month. I found a 1964 Picturephone display set, mint in the boxes. Take a look.

I recently began going through my father's collection. He was a bell worker for over 40 years. This is what I found today in his attic. Let me know what you think!

This is a Picturephone, no doubt. My Father spoke about it before he passed away. It is in Mint condition. It is a display unit I believe. I have all the paperwork too for setting up the display (as big as a bible!) along with the phone part. Because of the angle of my dad's attic I was unable to take a good pic, but it is like new.

Similar to the manner in which Dave found his, I stumbled upon the auction just moments after the Buy It Now had been listed.  The phone needed some work but is a very early release of the Western Electric lighted phones.  As seen here:
