I don't need a comparison to know that $12  to ship an envelope to Canada is a rip-off. I've sold comics to Americans and it's cost me $3.25 to ship it.

Your $3.25 first class shipping isn't trackable. I worked for Canada Post until retirement. To make a fair comparison, you would have to price Express Post to ship one to the US to maintain traceability. Most sellers require shipments be trackable and can be insured which is why the higher rate. Imagine shipping your Amazing Spider Man #1 VG 1963 Marvel Comic without tracking and insurance.

Well Dave I've never sold a Spider Man #1.

You can find an exception to every rule. What I'm talking about is the guy that charges $12 to ship it and when you get it the postage was $3.50.  No tracking, no insurance.

I let them know what they were getting. Usually had no problem with it. They wanted tracking, I got them tracking. Like I said...customer service, not a rip-off.

But that is with no tracking or insurance. It is understandable for an ebay seller to send in a way that is trackable and insurable.

I agree, Dave. I was merely confirming Bill's $3.50 price for an untraceable shipment of a comic book. Just add $13.65 for registered mail, or just pay $20.55 for priority mail international.

I have to agree with Bill in one way. Many times I have bought inexpensive items that could come 1st Class International, but that the seller will only send Priority making the price skyrocket. Like Bill says, it is customer service and should be compared against the cost of replacing the item. Often, 1st Class would do.

Oops--no insurance available on the flat rate envelopes either. But registered mail for $13.65 additional fee should at least guarantee delivery.

1st Class International is good for up to 4 pounds.

Out of every dollar I spend on the museum, it seems I spend at least two dollars for shipping! Argggh!

Much as I hate high shipping rates, I don't see this as a fair comment. Sellers have money invested in the items they sell. And they have a right to make sure their items are sent in a way that guarantees that they can be traced, and which will insure them against loss should the shipment be lost or is damaged. First class shipping provides no protection.

So, if an item has considerable cost, they SHOULD be shipped in a way that provides good tracking for both the seller and buyer's protection. It is those services which do cost more, be it USPS, Canada Post, UPS, Fedex, yes, and even the Global Shipping Program.

Sending out an $8000 item in a first class envelope would not only be risky, it would be stupid. Yes, even one comic book can be worth that.

But more often they aren't. One would hope sellers would use common sense, and make the shipping match the risk of loss. And not overcharging for shipping. I have seen items worth small amounts go for ten times the normal shipping cost. That should be illegal.

However, bringing the thread back to what it began as, this is about Ebay Global Shipping - it has gone very much off topic. My point about GSP is it does work, and eliminates overcharging for shipping - yes, they do charge a bit for the service, but at the same time, generally you do save money on the shipping portion and it works out about even. This deduction is made by going over a number of items I have had to purchase using GSP and comparing costs, and not by a gut reaction to automatically hate and avoid it. As I mention, while I don't like GSP, I have received a number of items through it, and in comparison to other items very comparable sent via USPS, the total stays about the same.

Yes, shipping is too expensive, but until someone invents a Teleporter, we are stuck with it.

And don't forget, if an item comes through USPS/Canada Post and doesn't get caught by customs, by law (don't take my word for it,  call Revenue Canada) if you don't pay tax during shipping, you are required to report the amount and then pay tax on it. So you really aren't saving anything, are you?  Never mind that most people don't report them. By law, they are committing a crime in the same way that if you order something from a Canadian seller and don''t pay the blended GST when it arrives, likewise, you are committing a crime. Don't take my word for it, call Revenue Canada.

I have never sold anything on eBay. Its hard enough to be a buyer!

First, I talk about of the unscrupulous sellers who want to sell their stuff much more than the respective value fo their stuff that's all.. I know that certain sellers make some work on their phone, I know that they must do a profit, but not at an exorbitant price at their value okay and a normal shipping okay too...


PS::And for my part, I buy directly from the seller, given that it is its own property to him, I think not any need to pay fees to the stupid Government which does not properly his job...But I well understood what you want to tell me even if it is not my native language...
