Heres a toast to all my new Friends , may the new year be full of Happiness.

Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. ~ Lord Alfred Tennyson

Happy New Year, everybody!  Dennis, if I could take some of that snow off your hands, I'd do it in a heartbeat.  When it comes to snow, we've been robbed all year.

For a couple weeks before Christmas we had a mountain of snow.  It was getting to the point that when I shoveled my driveway (I don't use a snow blower when there's only a couple inches on the ground) I had to lift the shovel and throw the snow over the pile.  Then we had a warm up a week ago.  I think it was last Saturday it went up to 62 degrees, breaking a record of 59 set in 1971.  It all melted.  I could see the lawn again.  Our "January thaw" early.  We got 2-3 inches night before last so things are white again.  I think it's going to be a big snow year up here in Michigan.  Up along the Great Lakes they get much more than we do here in the Detroit area.  Whenever you'd like to take some home with you, just come on by and fill up the trunk.  We have plenty!

Happy new all!  Gee it's 2009, where is my George Jetson lifestyle that I expected when I was a kid?

Well you have snow in Michigan, while out here in California we are having our usual bipolar weather like everything else here.  If you are in Pasadena, then today looked nice.  If you are here in the Central Valley, it's buried under fog and gloomy, our usual for January.

But we are considering a drive up to the snow, it's just about a two hour drive to Sequoia national park and we can go up, play in the snow for a bit, and drive home.

Heath, that sounds like a good time.  One of these days I'd like to spend some time exploring all the different areas of California.  I did visit San Francisco a few years ago and had a great time.  But I know there is so much more to see, especially going north.

With regard to the snow, I always thought it would be nice if one could put the snow away with the Christmas lights.  It seems like things speed up on Labor Day....Halloween, then Thanksgiving and zoom it's Christmas.  Then it all just stops.  Jaaaaannnnnnnnuuuuuaaaaaarrrrrrrryyyyyy, Feeeebbbbbrrrrrrrruuuuuuarrrrry....you get the idea....it's not really warm here until the end of May.  But if one is into skiing or snowmobiling, this is the place to come most winters.  Have fun!

You're a Michiganian? Where?
My original family lived in Harper Woods, a suburb of Detroit.
Later, I lived in the beutiful ghettos of Detroit, then, Kalamazoo. Yes, folks, there really is a Kalamazoo.
I now live in Florida.
Happy New Year, all, and, a belated Bah, Humbug from Uncle Scrooge, and, me.....

Here's a hot New Years Eve agenda in New England:
leftovers for supper
computer work (really!) for 2 hours
read a novel for 3 minutes in bed
zonked by 8:30

But we had beautiful snow and great snowballs today!
Clear road tomorrow for driving to Boston to see #2 child.

Happy New Year, all!

Hey Ellen, what kind of leftovers you got?  I have some prime rib, deer roast, dirty rice, and candied yams that I'm tired of. Wanna swap?

Happy New Years everybody - if you're going out tonight, please be careful and drive the speed limit. There's gonna be a bunch of drunks out tonight as well as police.

Hobie, sounds like you're having a good new year and I'd like to have had dinner at your place.

I'm not much of a drinker these days though I used to be about 5 or 6 years ago. I actually spent my night being the designated driver for my brother and his girlfriend. It's 3:25 and I've just gotten home - sober. I may be 31 but tonight I don't feel a day older than 80. I hope everybody has had a SAFE and happy new year's celebration. Good night, or morning depending on how you look at it.

Leftovers was a casserole-ey thing of chicken thighs, celeriac, onion, garlic, celery, homegrown carrots.  No name, an invention of the moment.  Also some weird soba noodles in peanut sauce.  I didn't know I don't like soba noodles.  Good thing they were free.  So, not the greatest leftovers, but good enough.

Today includes the fruitcake we made with apricots, dried apples, pecans and cashews; also cream in place of the Grand Marnier.  Only liquor around here is Guiness.

It snowed again, but only an inch, maybe.  Quite drive-able.

I got the push-button phone for my office - 1967 refurb in 85.  I have to listen while I push, because some of the buttons aren't making the connection on the first push.  Beautiful ring, though!

Well, the first decade of the second millennium has been the uh-oh's, right?  Mr. Encyclopedia here says the decade doesn't end until the end of 2010 - like a dime doesn't end until the end off the tenth cent, if you see what I mean.

I hope that everyone has a good time celebrating out with the old and in with the new tomorrow night AND all the best for 2012.

Who out there will ring in the New Year last? Anyone out there further west than us West Coasters? Alaska or Hawaii?

And how about first? DavePEI is likely first in North America but hours after Great Britain and how about further east in Europe or Asia?

Yes I remember thinking how confusing abreviated dates would be after 2000. 01/08/04  or was that 08/01/04  but then again maybe 04/08/01 only of not 04/01/08 ??  They missed the boat leading up to 2000 and all the Y2K concerns to set a world standard for abbreviated dates to end the confusion for once and for all!

2013/Dec/31 - My favorite as it leaves no confusion but the "Dec" part doesn't sort properly in computers of course.

2013/12/31 - My second favorite as it will always sort properly in computers and is {IMHO} logical in that it puts the three categories in decending order of importance Year-Month-Day.

I know...who asked me!

I agree.  I always use YYYY-MM-DD as part of a file name that I want to get sorted correctly.

Y2k was such a non-event.  I was involved with a start-up bank in 1999.  (Not the bank I am currently with).  The FDIC would not give us our charter until we had a detailed Y2k contingency plan in place and we had assurances from all our 3rd party vendors that their services, software and everything else was y2k compliant.  I remember cutting my 2000 new years eve festivities short to go into the bank at 11:45pm and stay there until after midnight to test everything to make sure the system didn't blow up.  Nobody really thought it would, but that was in our contingency plan, so that's what we did.

It sure gave Y2k consultants a way to make money for a few months.

Happy New Years from snowy PEI. We just got a Skype call from my son and his girlfriend at Parliament Hill in Ottawa. They had planned to stay for the fireworks, but are thinking twice about it, as it is minus 17 c. (1.39 f.) and windy, with three hours to wait :)   They sure looked cold! They called from their smart phone.

It is the same temperature here, but we are safely inside!

So from the Frozen North  (and North-East), a very Happy New Year!

Y2K was such a dumb idea. My grandma was so scared of Y2K that she stocked up on some sort of canned food that she didn't even like. When the year 2000 hit, and no apocalypse came, she had piles upon piles of canned food that she hated stacked up in her basement. ???

Y2K was such a dumb idea.

Of course it wasn't "an idea" as in a marketing scheme or a new way to celebrate New Years Eve/Day. It was a genuine concern that some bad things could happen though some took it to the extreme that if lots of bad things happened we could be on our own for awhile. Just like any other disaster such as a fire at your house, the fire department, ambulances and police will be right there and you will probably be okay. But if that house fire is the result of a major earthquake, the authorities will be overwhelmed and help is probably NOT on the way to your house so you have to be a little prepared to fend for yourself.

The fact that Y2K "was a bust" might be a testement to the fact that millions or maybe billions were spent at all levels to prepare for it (including your Grandmothers extra food storage). Or maybe it was just an overblown concern. Probably a bit of each.

Personally we didn't do anything different at our house but then we always seem to have a lot of food and some water stored as we are in a prime earthquake area. Your grandmother may have been smart storing some extra food, or maybe it was a waste. Presumably she was a last minute shopper or she could have stored away food that she liked! The best food to store for long term......Twinkies!

I think that it was good to prepare, but the worst thing that could have happened at the year 2000 was a computers' internal calender going from 12/32/99 to 01/01/09, and would need to be reset. People were thinking that computers all over the globe would start to shut down, and everything digital or computerized would go berserk. That kind of preparedness is a little out of hand, but fire, burglaries, and everyday mishaps that we have all seen happen to other people more than once in our lives should be taken notice of, and not a story based on rumors and "what ifs".

Just my two cents.

It was awhile ago now so I can't recall all of the potential worries that were out there but I think it was a lot more than home computers rolling over to the wrong date. Computers run everything including the phone systems, air traffic control, military etc etc. Had any of these just shut down because of error codes being generated there could have been big problems.

Just last month there was mayhem for a day or more with the British air traffic control because some computers didn't come out if overnight mode properly. They were only able to handle something like 25% of the air traffic the following day because of the computer glitch. Flights around the world were cancelled and/or re routed.

But the computer would just be wrong, the calender would start the next year as the earliest year it knows. The year 2000 wasn't programmed into the memory yet, and the calender would just be incorrect. Most commercial computers didn't even have calendars, so they wouldn't even be affected.

Others would know a lot more than I do but I believe that there was a real fear that some of the processors might just lockup, shut down or otherwise cause unknown problems downstream. It was all an effort to test and prove that there was little chance of this happening.

Yeah, I'm guessing that the thought of a small computer error escalated people's imagination, and people started to freak out. That's the way things like this are normally born. :P

In defense of the Y2k work that was done:

The Y2k issue was very much a very large potential problem.  Fortunately, the "over-kill" work that went into it did make it a non-event.

Personal computers were the smallest part of the problem.  Businesses..... all businesses world-wide, including the US and all other governments were at risk, as were their customers and the public.

I work in banking.  Banking is very much date-driven.  Interest on loans and deposits are all calculated as a function of dates.  Older computer systems did not have a field for the century.  December 31, 1999 was stored in a computer as 12/31/99, which assumed 1999.  A program that was used to calculate the number of days between two dates would not know which century 1/1/00 was in.  Presumably the last century of 1/1/1900.  Someone born on 1/1/2000 would be assumed to be 100 years old.

Not only was it important for banking, but just about everyone else.  Due dates on payments would be confused and computers would not be able to send out proper notifications.  Social Security eligibility and a million other eligibilities are based on a person's age.  Can you imagine what would happen if automated payments and Social Security benefits stopped even for a couple days due to a date glitch.  Can you imagine what would happen if the stock market could not register a trade because it thought the date was in the past?

Airline flights are based on dates and times.  A computer that is supposed to make ready all the preparations of airline flights that would be due to take off after Midnight on 1/1/00 might just decide that the flight was in the past and cause the computers of the airlines and the FAA to just drop the flight from the database.  Airlines were a very critical part of the Y2K fix.  Much of the public feared that pilot navigation systems of airlines and the FAA would just go dead at midnight and pilots would be on their own to fly airlines.  Many people avoided flying or being in the air en route at that time.

It was far reaching to every sector of the public that uses any kind of automation at all, and particularly any data system that had its roots in older main-frame applications that were originally written in the 1970's or 1980's under legacy programming languages such as COBOL, and others.

Yes, much of it was self-propelled fear, but there was a real potential that things would have gone very wrong, and would have been much more than just an inconvenience that would have required just at reboot or resetting of a computer's date.  Remember it was more than just what a computer's clock displayed, and was all about how the computer used the dates in it's calculations and programs.

I too said in this thread that a lot of consultants made a lot of money off this non-event.  That, in my opinion was true.  What I also believe is true is that the scare did force everyone to look at their calculations and make sure they were ok.  In reality, most companies had already done that well before 1/1/2000.

Happy New Year's 2015 All!

It is minus 3 c. (26.6 f) with wall to wall sunshine. When I woke up this morning, there was only a skiff of snow on the ground - it is bare again now.

It was cold the past two days - over the last two nights at minus 10 c., the bay has frozen over.

Its a beautiful day! Compare that to last New Year's day where we had already had two months of snow!

Beautiful pictures Greg! Glad you enjoyed one of our fav places to go as well. Well, until we discovered on a trip there in August that our fav Mexican restaurant in our fav city (Victoria) had burned down! We are still devasted!

I bet your dollar got you a lot further here than expected as well. Unfortunately it works just the opposite for us. Everything from the US or in the US has gone up by 40% over the last two years just because of currency exchange rates. It is killing us!! But it is a great deal for tourists from the USA. Anyone contemplating trips to Canada, now is the time to think seriously about it.

It isn't going to turn around anytime soon but we keep hoping that it at least starts to improve (for us) soon. {Sorry for the rant!}

Happy new year all! Hopefully this one'll be a better one for me, given that thanks to my brother causing trouble on our street, I was arrested by the police for the first time in my life, though I will give credit to the officers involved as they treated me well and with dignity as they saw I wasn't "an idiot", so no cuffs needed, but it was an experience I really do not wish to repeat, so like I say, I hope this year'll be a better one for me... :)

I didn't know that so looked it up and found this as one of the several reasons (http://mix925abilene.com/the-tradition-behind-eating-black-eyed-peas-on-new-years/) why New Year's Eve or Day is celebrated eating Black-Eyed Peas.

"People eat black-eyed peas on New Year's to bring luck and prosperity in the new year.

Black-eyed peas started out as a crop raised to feed animals up until the Civil War. It then became a nourishing food for Confederate soldiers when Sherman's troops destroyed other food crops. Now, especially in the south, it is a staple on New Year's eve.

Along with eating black-eyed peas, another tradition is to have cabbage, or greens of some sort (turnip, mustard, collard or cabbage) which also brings good luck and prosperity.

Then there is your cornbread, I love black eyed peas and cornbread!

So here is what each food stands for: black eyed peas are coins, cabbage or greens are paper money and cornbread is gold.

Some people say you have to eat 1 pea for each day of the year, I've always been told as long as you eat 1 pea, it serves it's purpose. So those of you who don't like them at least eat 1 little bitty pea (they're tiny) so you have good luck.

Now I can't say any of this actually works seeing as I eat all three every year and still can't win the lottery; but I won't take any chances. I will be eating some collard greens along with my black eyed peas and cornbread on New Year's eve."
