HMMM, interesting. First guess would be to shut off ringer but without seeing the connection cannot be sure.

What's it for?

That's an easy one....its for ruining a pink 500 case.

Another common "mod" is a push button which is frequently added to PBX power fail stations to ground start a trunk that is automatically connected to the phone if the PBX crashes.
