Title: Help with Ringing on Metal North Galion 5/40
Post by: Doug Rose on July 04, 2014, 12:50:05 PM
I have had this wonderful metal North Galion for a while. With the rainy 4th, I went to work on it. It has a great old metal north dial which sound like bells when dialing. This issue I have is I cannot get it to ring. There is something wired between L2 and loc 5. When where I would normall jump it to ring. I removed the wiring and jump it but it still does not ring. It is a single line ringer. Any advice on what this device is?? I love those old North dials and the sound it make dialing. It calls out with ease, conversation is clear with a THICK curly cord The modular line cord was on the phone. I took it off and it is not the issue. I hate to remove the ringer for this matching dates phone from May 1940...Doug

Nice set, Doug.

From this angle, the part looks like a back view of a panel mount RCA jack.  Photos of it out of the phone would help.

I trust you've already checked and tested the ringer wiring, looking for shorts or opens.

When troubleshooting ringers, you can't go wrong by checking continuity of the ringer coils.

If they test negative, you may be lucky and be able to isolate where the break is and repair it or wire it using only one of the two coils.

If they test positive, wire it in series with a known good capacitor between L1 and L2.  If that works, replace the capacitor.

GOT IT!!! Paul you were right on the money, it was an RCA jack. I removed it and connected the green from  the ringer to L2 and still got nothing. I connect dial tone right to the ringer and still got nothing. I lightly oiled the back of the ringer and BINGO ...it rings LOUD. It was just stuck. Two hours of frustration at least comes to fruition. What a beautiful phone. I just love the dial.

Paul, what to you think the RCA jack was for, bridged across L2 and pos 5....Doug

One never knows what was in the mind of the former owner who tinkered.

5 was usually for the mounting cord ground connection, so wouldn't do much, unless there was additional internal wiring.

The RCA jack suggests hooking to an audio cable, perhaps for making tape recordings of calls - without using a proper recording coupler.
