Seriously, though, it looks like somebody removed part/all of the old guts, and installed the innards of a 554 (or somesuch) inside, wiring the old transmitter/receiver/etc. to that. Hard to tell from the lousy pictures, of course...

We have to go deeper.........

I remember seeing a reproduction WE 317 where the whole front panel would hinge open and you'd mount your modern wall phone inside.
