Does anyone out here on the forum have any sites they would like to share that show an in-depth look at how these wonderful objects we collect were designed, and eventually mass produced?

I've always admired Henry Dreyfuss. He must have loved his job......

There was a good video on Youtube a while back showing how Bakelite was made. They showed a seemingly rare glimpse of how telephone handset casings were molded in lead forms; pretty amazing!

I'd really like to see how they made the molds.

Thanks for any info!

I find "From the Far Corners of the Earth" very informative about the materials and how they were used.  There are two editions - 1927 and 1939.  You can find electronic copies about half way down the page here:

Dreyfuss had an amazing long-term relationship with the Bell System.  There are several good articles in Bell publications, such as the Bell System Technical Journal and Bell Laboratories Record.  Some can be found in the TCI Library by doing a site Google search for "Dreyfuss."

There have also been some good articles in TCI's Singing Wires journal.  Several of us had the privledge of talking with Donald Genaro, who followed Henry Dreyfuss as leader of the firm, and was actively involved with the design of later 500-series variations, the Princess, Trimline and Design Line sets.

I have studied the design process and started cataloging some of the design models and field trial sets that were made along the path to arriving at the production models of several sets.  Start here, then follow the first link:

There was a period of amazing creativity from the late 1950s to the early 70s.

It is written pretty much about the design of The Swedish model  (in Norwegian) and about our 1953 model too.

(It seems like the redesign of the telemuseum home pages are a slow process, and I have problems finding more just now)

Matilo Telephones

Here is a nice video of the manufacture of Heemaf 1955 telephones.

You can see how individual components were made and how the assembly proces took place.
