I recently found this at a salvage yard and thought it was quite interesting, however I have had absolutely no luck in figuring out precisely what it *is*. It seems like some kind of intercom system, however I can't find anything remotely like it. I'm far from an expert in vintage phones, hopefully someone here can enlighten me? Or am I totally on the wrong track as to what this is? Thanks in advance for any help!

So nobody has any idea at all?  ???

I don't know much about it, probably sence I wasn't alive when those were installed. But it seems like a Nutone system where you push up a rocker to page a room..

That's what I think though.

Most likely as you have already surmised it is an intercom but absolutely has nothing to do with vintage telephones and obviously not manufactured by Nutone.

The transistors listed are early types and there are parts missing.
