When wiring has been messed about with by a Mr. Fixit, it's always easier just pulling everything off and starting again, saves a lot of headaches down the line trying to make incorrect wiring work... :)

IIRC from my last few AE restorations it is also easier to remove the dial & bracket ;D

I do believe you're right, 2cv.

And thanks for the tip, Harry.  I could see how the dial could definitely get in the way.  I'll follow your advice.  I'll probably tackle it tonight.

I changed the wiring to conform to the AE wiring diagram.  The handset volume is just fine now...but the ringer doesn't work!  I'm not too concerned about the ringer. It's not the only phone in the house.  At least now that the volume is fine, it's usable!

If you have one of the ringer leads on 9 move it to 8 along with the line cord lead.
