Dan,

I don't own one of the early faceplates. My understanding, however, is that the older ones had the white letters and numbers printed onto a clear piece of plastic that then fit over a black backing.

Of course, as you know, the newer ones are actually a "sandwich" of two different colors of plastic, with the secondary color being allowed to poke through at the relevant spots.

Dan, Yes the early ones were like an overlay that is on top of the plastic.  If one were to try and use sand paper on it it would ruin it.  The numbers/letters tend to yellow.  My 1950 set has one of these.

I actually really like this phone a lot.  It's got a story behind it now, a lot of charachter not to mention it's a very nice looking phone.  I think you got a winner!
