Title: What are your Favorite Cars???
Post by: Bill Cahill on April 17, 2009, 05:16:41 PM
One of mine is the model T. I'm also partial to 50's convertables, and, cars with wings in back, and, tail fins.
I love the 30's, and, 40's trucks.
Oh, boy, I wish I could own a Bentley, or Stutz...... Kind of reminds me that I once had a link to an auction on the internet. An old miser died, and, when they got into his barn they found a treasure house of rare cars, and, parts. Even some brand new engines from the teens.
I couldn't believe my eyes!

I love some of the early Bugattis.  I wouldn't mind finding this in a garage:

Lately my girlfriend and I have been really enjoying the British TV series "Top Gear", but I wish they featured more classic cars from the 1930s-1950s:

I remember that auction, Bill.  Packed bumper to bumper and door to door, they were.  Some of the world's rarest and most desirable cars, all packed away for goodness knows what.

My favorites are Packards from the 1930s and '40s, Buicks from the '50s and '60s, convertibles from any era.  I've never been into sports cars, instead mainly luxury cars or family cars.  My dream car would be a 1940 Packard One-Eighty. Or a Jordan Playboy.  Or a 1920s sedan or any make.  Or... I could go on and on.

I've had a 1959 Buick Electra four door hardtop, a 1967 Buick Electra 225 convertible (both in near showroom condition), and a handful of more modern Buicks and Cadillacs.  My pride and joy right now is a 1951 Packard 300 sedan.

Matt, Top Gear is one of my favorite shows.

I've had only a couple of American cars of classic lineage, a 51' Ford PU, a 60' Chevy and that's about it.  Instead the VW Bug bit me pretty hard and I ended up with a small collection over the years of various VWs.  My favorite, well maybe it was my fav they were all pretty cool, was the 77' lime green camper van.  That was a fun filled 70's adventure, especially in a crosswind!  Even the diesel Rabbits were fun to me, but the Bug was a more interesting ride I thought.  I still have various VW parts scattered about the garage though I've not owned a VW for a decade.

I currently own a '65 Mustang with 65,000 original miles, and a 1965 Impala Convertible.

A few cars I would love to have:  a '40  Ford Conv, a '34 Ford roadster, a '59 Caddy Conv, a '71 hemi Cuda Conv, any 60's Lincoln Continental conv 4 door (mission impossible-mr phelps drove one) , a '63 Corvette split window coupe, an AMC AMX or nice Javelin,  and just for the reaction, a 60's Amphicar.

Also, a 59 chevy wagon (love the tailfins on those, and a want a wagon), also I love AMC's (had a rambler growing up) because i respected this company as a trailblazer.

I currently have a 58 Chevy Delray 4-door and an 87 Chevy Caprice Wagon (woodie).  My first car was a 60 Chevy Bel-Air 4-door.  I am going to buy one once I'm done building my 58 and sell it.  My dad and I are also working on his 57 Chevy 4-door and have a 52 Ford Pickup.

I'll post pics as I get them!  I posted some earlier, but have since made progress.  I love all big yachts, from the big gangster cars of the 30's (and any cars prior) all the way to the end of the era with the 70's.

Also, my dad's looking for a 65 Impala SS convertible as the 65 SS is his favorite car.

The boyfriend of the late 1980's had a '65 Chevy II Nova, with a detachable hood (not on purpose) that he would rip off and throw on the shoulder of the highway to tinker at midnight on the Maine Turnpike when it broke down once again.  Ah, the days.  May they never come again (nor him).  But it was a cool car if you weren't in a hurry.  Although he *said* it would do 125 mph.  When it would go...

Actually, I like my current car best - 1992 Volvo 240, grey, station wagon, with a John Deere green hood, and a frieze of ecological bumper stickers around the middle ("we all live downstream").  I had 3 plastic chickens and a goose on the hood, but they came off in the snow.  The back seat is folded up and it's full of garden tools.

Ah Ellen, glad to hear I'm not the only happy Station Wagon Owner here.  I was crusing through town today with my buddy in the 3rd row backwards facing seat, with the back window down waving at people haha.  Whatever it took to keep him entertained while me and my lady friend were in the front.

For about 2 weeks in the early 90's I owned a giant Ford LTD Country Squire wagon, 77' model, avocado green with wood grain sides, and wire hub caps.  It was like driving an oil tanker, the handling was hilarious, it bobbed and weaved over bumps, and it had a goofy set of vice grip pliers at the dear shift.  The engine was a huge 400 something ci V-8 that had hardly any actual power and yet drank gas like sailors drinking beer on leave at a bar in Hong Kong.

I liked that car.

I had a '69 Mercedes four door sedan for a couple of years.  I wasn't looking for anything fancy like that, but it just came up for sale cheap.  I loved it.  She drove like a fast tank and got decent gas mileage to boot.  But the upkeep was just too much.  I admit that my dream car now would be a Lotus Elise.  In British green, of course.

The 77 Ford LTD Wagon is the one that got me hooked on wagons, when I was a kid we had one, minus the di-noc (industry term for woodgrain) had a 400 motor, and was as my mom said "baby crap brown" I loved that thing.  I actually came across a 77 Country Squire with a 460, Fords Biggest at the time! right here in town for 2400 bucks.  Blue with the di-noc, and if I had 2400, it would be mine!  What a land yacht! Too bad I'm poor and a Chevy man!

When my Dad was 16 (that would be 1935) he had a 1928 sixteen cylinder Cadillac that cost him $50.  I'll see if my sister still has a picture.  BrinyBay; I can't identify your pictures but basically all old cars make me drool, especially from the late 20s to the 40s.

My grandfather drove a logging truck in Oregon for awhile (I don't know what it was but I suspect a Ford) that still had wooden wheels.

I don't have an old car, but if I am going to look for one, that would be a Mercedes Benz or an Austin 70's Mini Cooper just what Mr. Bean is driving.

I used to drive a Mercedes before, a 80's model sedan owned by my aunt. Today I owned a Mitsubishi Pajero 98 model which I use for my work and leisure driving to the provinces.

In one of my trips to the old district of Manila, I found this car. I don't know what model or make of this but surely it an old car. I just felt sad about it because as seen in the picture, the car is in state of despair. The owner just parked it outside his garage. The front grille is missing and the upholstered seats and sidings are all gone. It seems that the engines are still intact but we may never know if it would still run.

And while we're on the subject, can anybody identify the year and make of the vehicle in this picture?
I think it's a model T Ford. Built from 1908 to 1927.

That is Definately a Ford Model T, they changed very little, but this looks to be a mid-production one from the teens, likely just post WWI if I had to guess.  It's hard to tell from a b&w pic, earlier ones had brass radiators which this doesn't appear to be.  The other photo is harder to see, looks to be mid 30's of some sort about 33 to 38, but it's hard to tell with the car so covered.

Speaking of British cars, one of the few sports cars I actually like is the older Sunbeam Alpine.

But most of my fave British cars (like my fave American cars) are large cars... the bigger Humbers, Hillmans, Austins, Daimlers, etc.

I think my favorite would have to be a 60's Lincoln-Continental convertible.  Maybe it's the Kennedy association, or just that Mr. Douglas had one in "Green Acres"....but no other car influenced the design of 60's (and some 70's) cars than this model.  It's design was so crisp and clean, just after an era of excess and gaudy tailfins.  Plus the "suicide doors" just made the car.

Jim, that is a classic for sure.  When I was about ten my buddy's parents had a yellow one....I think it was a '63.  They carpooled in that car.  It was fun opening up those suicide doors to get in back.

The Presidential Limousine that Kennedy was in when he was shot in Dallas is currently at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mi.

I love the Continental convertibles-definitely a favorite of mine.

I'm a huge Lincoln fan anyway, and that's what the whole immediate family drives(Mom has a Towncar, Dad has a recent vintage Continental, and I have an LS). The '60s Continentals are about as good as they got, though.

I've seen it several times at the Henry Ford.  I can't believe that after Kennedy was killed, the car was rebuilt with a permanent top and used by Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter.  They should have put it away just as it was.  I couldn't imagine riding in that car knowing the crime of the century happened in it.

They used to be very stingy with spending on presidential limousines.  Several of them were worked over numerous times because they just weren't allowed the funds to build new ones.  But I'm with you... If I were a president following that event, I don't think I could have ridden in it.  I don't think I could even now.

You're on the money Bing!  It's an 87.  That was the first year of the Composite headlites as you said.  The body was around in 79 too though Dennis.  Very little changed in or out on these babies through the years of this body style (1977-1990) the sad part is this yacht was a 'downsized' version!  I could go on and on about the B-Body Caprice from these years, but I won't bore you, if you're interested in wagons, there's a great site that I'm also an active member on.

Pretty cool!  We live near the Sierra Sky Park, where people have garages for their light planes, all the street are designed for planes to taxi on with low signs etc, and there is a runway in the heart of the neighborhood.

Nice, my dad's first car was a 66 Caprice Wagon with a 396 and a TH400.  It had been my grandpa's.  He was a station wagon man and had many of them.  When I was  a kid, mom had a 1977 Ford LTD, and I fell in love with that car.  She also had an 81 AMC Eagle.  But the LTD was part of my inspiration to buy my Caprice.

Thank you, Dennis.  The only drawback to owning a classic car is you can't go anywhere in it incognito!!! ;D  That red and white wagon your folks had would have looked right at home on 1950's & '60's highways-- a classic color scheme of the time.

Oooh, that tickles a memory! Right around 1960, my Dad bought a Plymouth Fury station wagon so we could tow our Airstream trailer around the country on vacations. As I recall, it had a 383 V-8 that sounded so cool, and a four-speed on the steering column. I was too young to drive, but he let me start it, and move forward and back in the driveway (which was only about twice as long as the car!) It wasn't a wonderfully good-looking car, but I just shivered at the feel of all that pent-up hosepower, even at my tender age!

This must be the Plymouth Fury forum.  My parents had a 1961 Fury that was white with a red roof.  They had originally bought a new 1960 Chrysler convertible that leaked like a sieve when it rained.  They took it back to the dealer so many times to have the problem fixed that the dealer took the car back and gave them a new Fury hardtop, instead.

I believe the 57  Fury was the evil car in the movie 'Christine," wasn't it?
Title: Re: What are your favorite cars???
Post by: Jester on May 25, 2009, 06:42:00 PM
'Christine' was supposed to be a '58, Dan, but the body for those two years was virtually the same.  Mr. King took alot of artistic liberties in the book when he decribed the detatils of the car.  The biggie is the original owner ordering the car in red/white.  1958 was the last year that Fury was the top-of-the-line, low production, special order performance option, was only available in two door hardtop or convertible(?),  and was available in one color scheme-- 'Fury' white with buckskin beige interior.  The cars used on the movie set were Belvedere hardtops with Fury trim & badges added on.  The two cars pictured above are surviving examples of SUPER low production runs.  The '56 (debut year for the Fury) had a production run @ 5000.  '57 was between 8000 to 10,000.  I don't recall any figures for '58, but I recall hearing that all auto production suffered from economic recession that year, so the figure should be lower than '57.  Also, Chrysler's QC for '57 was SO bad, sales figures were further affected by the bad taste left in consumers' mouths.  In '59, the FURY name was assigned to a trim option instead of a performance option, and is the first year the Fury badge was put on four door cars & station wagons.  You could still get a hot car with this name-- if you checked the 'Golden Commando" option on the order form.  For '59, this also included a trim option of white paint/ tan interior.

Pretty soon all Chrysler products will be rebadged Fiat's with all American names like:

jG-12000haLp

or

gPPt-12400ik

Conversation coming soon in mid-America:

"Hey Tex, what's yer new car?"

"Well'n I don't rightly know what it is, bought it down at Gregs All American Dodge/Chrysler, the name on the trunk says it's a Dodge iJg-9000.45kiP"

"Huh?"

Just got my torrid Red 2009 Challenger R/T. Funny thing is, driving this car gets me more attention than my neighbor's Corvette. Also the gas mileage is better than my 1999 6 cyl car, and it has a 378HP V-8 !

The Challengers sure are sharp looking cars-I've seen several driving around, and they look downright scary when they're coming at you.

I like the look of the new Camaros, too. Haven't seen any out on the road yet, but have seen them here and there(just got back from Disney World, and the Test Track ride at Epcot had one on display).

" Also the gas mileage is better than my 1999 6 cyl car, and it has a 378HP V-8 !"

I noticed a similar thing. Back last October, I traded my much beloved '94 Maxima for an '04 Lincoln LS.

The Maxima was a 3L V6, and about 160 HP. The Lincoln has a 3.9L V8 that gets 280 HP, plus it's a heavier car, is geared much more aggressively(with a 3.53 rear end), and still manages better gas mileage. My Maxima got about 15 mpg driving around town, and 22-23 on the interstate. I get a consistent 18-20mpg out of the Lincoln driving around town, and an easy 25mpg or better on the interstate.

The Lincoln's better is every way I can think of-it's a whole lot more fun to drive(more power, stiffer suspension, more responsive), has a much nicer interior with more "goodies", looks better, has more space, and does all of that while getting better gas mileage.

I like the new camaro's too, but the styling is not as "old school" for me. It looks like a 1969 that has been sat on by an elephant for a second or two.... I think the challenger will ultimately be a sleeper collector car 20 years or so from now.

My old time favorite is a 1980 Volvo 240 GL, 2.5 liter engine, 4 speed stick with electric overdrive.

I gave it away with 300,000 + miles to a friend from Tucson, AZ, who put another 500 miles on its way there.

In 1986, I drove it from CA, to Key West, FL, to New York city and back. Plus it made a few trips to Oklahoma.

A great car, and it is still running with the original engine. I did the clutch myself when it rolled into the 200k miles range. It is a daily driver for a student now.

That car you are looking for AtomicTom I once owned.  Mine was green, with woodgrain sides.  Had a two-barrel carb as I recall, and got horrific gas milage, but it was a sweet ride and had all the options.  There is one driving around my town that I see every so often, being a California car it has no rust and looks to be in decent, but not immaculate, shape.  The age of the driver makes me think it's probably a one owner.

Yeah, the 2 barrel carbs are worse on gas, no matter what anybody says.  Just got my tax money back and had 1200 bucks to my name (900 bucks more than I expected) and I called Rocky, he had just sold it.  I hope it doesn't go to the demo derbies.  It was a beaut!!!

Tom, you missed a nice one. It must have sat for a long time in a garage because the woodgrain was in great shape, as was the interior too. It even came with an 8-track tape, I see. I once owned a '79 Pontiac Grand Safari with an AM/FM 8-track and the speed on it was always too fast and everyone sort of sounded like martians. :) I learned to drive in a car very much like this, a 1972 Ford Country Sedan, light blue with an interior the same color as this car, but naugahyde. It had an AM/FM Stereo and that was the only option other than power seats that my dad splurged on when he ordered the car. We owned it up until about three years ago. Its 400 V8 had bent pushrods and wouldn't run. Somewhere I have a picture, but I can't find it at the moment.

he wants $1200. I was going to go for it but the wife said NO!
she said O.K. to an eldo (79-85) now I just need to find a decent one I can afford.

heres some pics of the Mark V.  if you are interested I can p.m. you the details.

The Lincoln is a nice looking car!  That Ford I was looking at, I was going to get it at a steal.  Rock told me it was 900 bucks and he'd cut me a deal (I've known him since I first got a car) I would have probably walked away with it for 500 bucks.  Just my luck that it got scooped up from under me.

The only wagon I'd like to have is one of the ones that GM made in the early 1970s.  They had a curved back, and the glass retracted into the roof, while the tailgate retracted under the floor--all at the push of a button.  That was a fairly brilliant idea.  Chevrolet called theirs the "Kingswood" as I recall.

Chevy made a Kingswood, and a Caprice Estate that did that, Oldsmobile's was a Custom Cruiser, Pontiac's was the Safari, and Buick's was the Estate.

I'm selling my Caprice Estate wagon right now, 87, good shape.  I'd like 800 bucks for it.

Nice.

Your '57 looks like the car that was buried in Tulsa for 50 years and dug up on its 50th anniversary.   Sadly there wasn't much left of it, water had gotten into the concrete container.   Friend and I went to Tulsa that weekend for the big annual Ford show there and stopped by to look at the Fury.   Sad sight.

Title: Re: What are your favorite cars???

I don't know of any truck of that age and size with four doors.  International had them after the war, though, and others probably did, too.  To my eye, the whole thing looks hinky.  There wouldn't have been a broad panel between the doors as on this one, for example.    If I were doing it, I'd take a complete sedan body and put it on the chassis, adding the bed right behind it.  The four doors would look completely original that way.  Still, it's an awesome looking truck.

I love most old cars from the '20s on up. The '62 Ford Galaxie 500 and the '60 Chevrolet Impala (2 door hardtops) are among my favorites. I must admit though that no other cars quite compare to those gorgeous DeLahayes. Here's a few examples

Yesssss... post-war Delahayes are just about as beautiful as a car can get.  They were just staggering.  I always wondered how the front wheels made their turns inside those skirts.  They can't have moved very far without striking them, could they?

Yes sir, GMC made a 60 degree V12. It was based on their V6s which started at 305 cu. in. all the way up to 400 something. The V12 used 4 V6 heads, 2 intake manifolds/carburetors, but used one casting for the block, a 1 peice crankshaft and a very long camshaft.  I had a '60 GMC bus with the V6 (351 cu. in.) in it some time ago. A friend had one in a pickup truck. Great engine, well made and really bad on gas.  There is a site dedicated to the GMC engines for more info.

That Cad is cool.

I know this will seem uber weird, but my 79' VW diesel Rabbit was one of my favorite cars of all time.  It got nearly 60 mpg, had a 18 gallon tank, and was really pretty quick and fun to drive.  I rebuilt the engine on it, did all the work myself, and learned it inside and out, finding it to be a very logically made and solid little car.  I also liked the rather pedestrian looks of it, it was what it was and had no pretense about it, just simple cheap transportation that was reliable day in and out.  With that large hatchback and folding rear seat you could fit a surprising amount of stuff in it.

Now if only it had AC... :P

Nice rides Tom! I like the squad car, my uncle just bought the same car different color from a sheriff in the Midwest somewhere. My cousin used to run one of the older squad cars, a Caprice I think it was. That car had some power man. That was from when the auctioned off their last series of squad cars and brought in the newer ones.

I used to drive one for a living.  They take a lot of abuse.  In a smaller community the engines have many more miles on them than the odometers...a lot of idle time.  Lots of braking, turning, shifting, etc.  Not to mention what often takes place in the back seat.  Drunks heaving,  people that have to use the bathroom really bad...(use your imagination).....The first thing I'd do is take it to the quarter car wash and spray down the inside...with lots of hot water!  :)

We always looked suspiciously at young guys (it's always a guy)  that bought them and drove around in a car that "looked' like the police.   Hmmmmmmmmmm

Cab companies like to buy them and paint them yellow.  A company in Chicago often came to our auctions for the old cars.  They'd often get a decent car for a low price.

The ironic thing is we always say the southern folks get all the deals.  I bought the Vic for 2000 from my dad.  I bought the Buick for 500 from my best friend.  And I bought the 63 from a guy for 800 bucks who wanted to trade me for my old vic years ago and decided he wanted me to just have the car for just what he had into it, not including buying the car.

The cop car was a higher ranking car, actually has a cloth rear seat.  It has plastic floors and I like that, easy to clean.  It has new tires, brakes, ball joints, alignment, intake, and hoses. Has led chasers in the front and rear windows, spotlight, ticket light, and of course the push bar.  I love these cars because they're powerful, reliable, and roomy.  And a lot of  young guys do drive them to look like cops including me.  A lot of guys in town do, even a couple at work.  I'm going to advertise for the gun store on it.  Our logo is a sheriff's star, which I'm putting on each door, and the rear quarters are going to say "Your Friendly Local Machine-Gun Dealer".

I had a Crown Vic before, it was a Michigan State Police Car, and then a Chicago Checker Cab.  It was uglier than sin, but it was a 2003 and was 1900 bucks.  Newest car I ever had.

I have always loved the 1965-66 Mustangs. The Mustang came out when I was 3 and I always was able to recognize one when I was little.
I owned a 1965 and a 1966. The 66 was built a little better.

I have seen one recently that was a 1966 convertable with 1965 trim (frt clip, side chrome and gascap)and aftermarket pony interior and rear GT package. It had the 66 console and runner strips. About the only things I would TRY to add was a pony steering wheel (Holy Grail) and GT light bars and exhaust tips.(GT sheild would be cool)

I was really tempted to wait and tell the owner how much I liked the car and describe his customizations to him. Of course it was classic red w/ white interior/top

I bet his parts supplier was the same guy I used 30 years ago. Back then Marco had 2 parts cars, a file of every old Mustang in a CO junkyard and a couple of parts catalog, He operated out of his front yard and would organize Mustang runs 2x a year. His passion built a nice niche business/lifestyle for him.

On the subject of nicknames I used to be called "Stang" and "Stang-Head"
My 10 minute college "english" speech turned into a 25 minute speech and Q/A session. (only reason I passed the course).

If you put a star on the door of an ex police car out here you would end up in some trouble, that looks too much like an in service police car and you would be forced to remove it.  Old school buses are even supposed to be painted in a different color scheme than the traditional yellow/black so they no longer can be mistaken for in service buses.

I did a couple of years as a community service officer way back in the late 80's and got to drive the old cars that no one else wanted at that time.  One was a late 70's Malibu, and the other an early 80's Caprice, both were worn worn worn out, they were the oldest cars on the force and kept around for the CSOs to use for our errands and patrols.  The Malibu had a fiberglass back seat that could be hosed off, yum. :P  The dept was buying dodges at that time, late 80's, they tended to not like the traditional Caprice/Crown Vics' that most depts were using then.  All the cars were rode hard and put up wet, their lifespans were pretty short and when we were done with them there was not much left.

A couple of years ago (2008?). our local police department sent all their old cop cars to the dealer and had them thouroughly rebuilt. This was due to budget shortages to buy new cars.

The star would be legal as it's the corporate logo for our business (Dixie Law Enforcement Warehouse).  I think that the new Ford Interceptor is a bad idea on their part, as it's based on the taurus, with only a V6 Option. Chevrolet is bringing back the Caprice, rear-wheel drive, and a V8 Platform, which is what the Crown Vic is, and why it is the most popular for not only police, but all service vehicles.  I think it would be a darn shame to retire the Crown Vic.

Hadn't heard that Chevrolet is going to start making the Caprice in the old setup again.  Many of the local area police have gone to Dodge Charger as it has the traditional layout they favor.  I test drove the new Taurus with their SHO package and it was darned impressive, as was the price!  (44 grand)

Here's a police car you probably won't see in the US anytime soon, but it makes a lot of sense for certain duties around town like what I did.

The parking cops in Lansing run vehicles very similar to that McHeath, they are even a bit smaller. Most of them ride the same couple square city blocks and hand out tickets all day, mostly for parking at a dead meter. It was like $12 if you paid it in the first hour and $30 thereafter.

The hardest part was coming from the country and remembering to put change in a meter every time you went to the post office. Hey, wait that sounds like a business deduction I missed  :) Cool post office though the capital building is across the adjacent street.

Our capital building in Michigan (Lansing) was designed by the same guy who did the White House. The top of it looks the same as the White House. I never took a pic of it even though I walked by it hundreds of times  :-\  Here is one from the web...

Well, my dad's talking about buying me a car, but I don't know which to pick.

He gave me three Choices

A 1966 Chevy Caprice Wagon, tan with woodie trim, 396 and a TH400 trans, just as his first car was.

A white and black 60 Impala, just like grandpa had.

Or a 59 Caddy, of course a fleetwood, go big or go home.

Going back to pickups, here's one I'd like to have.  It's not original, but it sure is a beautiful job.  It's a 1937 Packard, and Packard probably could have made a tidy sum if they had actually made something like this:

Weird? I was thinking about buying one of those. They are awesome!

I like em all too Tom, Impala would be great, but the Caddy is my choice if I gotta pick just one. They steer straight as an arrow, but seem to swerve when you pass a gas station  :)

There was one for sale here 3-4 years ago, big car and big engine, I thought it was real nice though, especially the interior.

Lookit this doozy!  A 37 Ford Motorhome:

http://www.gtamarketing.com/1937FordHousecar.html (http://www.gtamarketing.com/1937FordHousecar.html)

QuoteIntroducing Graeme's Once-In-a-Lifetime Discovery...

A 1937 Ford Housecar

One of only six said to have been made per year in the mid-'30s at the Ford Plant in St. Paul, Minnesota, according to an article on this car in a 1993 "Old Cars" magazine article.

Very few others--perhaps none--remain on the road, and certainly not in such amazing original condition. (The only other known example that I heard of was supposedly housed in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.  But that turned out to be an early 1920s Model T conversion, the curator told me. He said he'd never seen anything like this '37!)

When discovered in a garage (under a heavy cover) in Northern Minnesota in August 2001, she had only 19,000 miles, and the owner's manual was actually still the glove box in like-new condition!  She had always been garaged and treated with much TLC as a collector vehicle.

The interior, all wood lined, was still the way it appeared in the '30s and '40s, complete with framed photos of the original owner on his travels (mainly to Florida) and his cabin in the North Woods, plus and other memorabilia from the era.

Built on the '37 Ford Pickup frame and cowling (powered by a 60-hp flathead V8 with aluminum heads), the rear framing is all wood, with the metal skin wrapped around it. The roof structure, too, is all wood, over which the heavy, waterproofed canvas top is still very securely fitted. The structure of the body is solid, appearing from underneath to be all oak, and still in a remarkably unaltered, undamaged condition. The door frames are thick, solid oak, and oak is visible around the window openings (as on the four side windows in back) -- though it is painted over.

Those are some sweet type 3's.  There is a VW show coming up at our local fairgrounds in April that I'm looking forward to.  Did you know that you could still buy the Mark 1 Rabbit in South Africa until last year?  Continuous production from 1974 until 2009.  The Type 2 from 1968 is still in production in Brazil, below is a picture of a 2010 model.  I had a camper Type 2, it was a 77' model with the pop top and full kitchen, a very fun ride, mine even had AC.

Yeah Tom I'm kind of a milage nutter, my 95' Civic gets 38 on the freeway and about 31 in town, and it's got the hot rod Si engine and is like driving a go kart.  It's funny how you can find cars from 30 years ago that got better mileage than the super hi tech hybrids of today.

I love the 1965-1966 era chevys. I have a '65 Impala convertible that my dad and I restored when I was 16. I have had it 31 years now. I read somewhere that an independant study states 1965 was a watershed year in QUALITY for american cars, and GM in general.

I loved Gramps wagon, 327 with a powerglide, and smooth as silk. My impala only has the 283.

Dad's was a 396/TH400.  Bought it from Grandpa with a seized motor.  He also had a 65 Impala SS he bought for 200 bucks.  What's the details on yours? SS? What motor/trans, color?

Post by: Dan on March 19, 2010, 01:17:39 PM
The 65 impala conv is a 283 burgandy, black vinyl interior that will burn off your legs in the summer sun. It has the sharp original  spoke spinner wire wheel covers.

Gramps 66 caprice wagon was a dark ivy green and the interior was tan with the little bubble plastic over the seats. I remember trying to pop those like bubble wrap as a kid. The seat covers stayed on till the car was sold in the early 90's. The interior was basically mint because of this. I had a 327 and a statue of St Christopher on the dash. I took it before the wagon sold and still have it.

Both are automatics and neither was lucky enough to be a SS.

I'll post pics of the Impala when I get it out of storage in a couple of weeks.

Dad was my best friend, but he worked 70 hours a week and what little time I had with him was special. I was 21 when he died (cancer)

My brother who was  3 years older than me, got a super sharp 1974 Monte Carlo. This was in 1976 so it was a big deal. He put 2000 down on it and paid Dad off with 10 $200 monthly payments. Dad never bought us cars, but he helped us with insurance and major repairs.

I really wanted a 65 Mustang convertible. Ask any guy who was 16 in 1978 and it would be this or a Camaro or Firebird.

Dad talked me into a 1969 Rambler because it had 33,000 miles on it, was driven by a little ole' lady and it was a bullet proof TANK! $400 bucks Cheap to insure too.

Then my little sis in 1979 got a Olds Cutless Supreme and I really thought Dad thought he short changed me (even though I loved the rambler). We were hot on the trail for an original '65 stang conv at that point. I found a hardtop 1965, Ivy green  with a 225 horse 289 GT 4BBL engine. It was loaded with factory air, spoke spinners and power steering and brakes and 55,000 original miles . Price 1800!. We bought it.

Finally six months later the guy whom I bought the rambler off of (he was the son of the little ole lady) had an aunt with a 1965 impala. It had a bel air doghouse (lime green) on a burgundy body of an impala with a rotted top (not working) and rust on the quarters.

This is the car we restored together over a year. It cost $400 too (like the rambler) I put a grand in it between the paint, top and new top motor. It now has 105,000 miles. on it. I still have the stang and the impala. They are a symbol of my childhood and especially dad. The Mustang originally got all the looks and glory but in the last decade or so the Impala is now worth more and gets more thumbs up

The rambler lasted from 1978-1988 until I was rearended . The insurance company gave me 1200 for  it (it was totalled) and I used some of the money to by an engagement ring for the wifey (soon to be in 1989).

I have pushed AMC products on my sons, but surprisingly, my oldest wants a 2005 GT stang and my second son wants a Lincoln Mark 8 or a Mitsubishi 3000gt!

My mother bought a new Impala in 1962. Nothing but, trouble.
Many breakdowns. Many no starts.
Went through 2 barbeurators, 4 batteries, many spark plugs, 2 sets spark plug wires, brakes, shocks, and, at last attempt in 1965 engine kept back firing. Wouldn't keep running. My mother had to pay to have it towed away.  >:(

My mom had an AMC that was junk.  It was an 81 Eagle Sport.  She bought it in 83, when she graduated. Kind of a neat car, my grandpa bought it new from Ernie Von Schleidorn.  They had that car still when I was little, 3 engines and 4 transmissions later.  The first engine went a week after the warranty went out.  My grandpa went in there and threatened Ernie (they were good friends) and the work was done as it would be under warranty.  My dad liked that car.

In the 89 or so, my dad told my mom he was bringing home a car for his work (he was a lather in Milwaukee at the time and needed to haul tools).  He brought home a 'baby poo brown' 1977 Ford LTD station wagon.  (dad was a wagon guy before he was a truck guy) My ma told him she would not drive it and that she would not be stuck with it.  And he said that was fine, it was his car and he would be driving it.  Ma used to have to drive her grandpa's black Ford Woodie wagon before she bought the eagle.  We also had a Renault somewhere in here briefly.

In 1991, dad bought a Toyota pickup truck, which he had for 10 years to the day, oddly enough.  Good truck, had to be taken to the shop once in 10 years.  He was using that for the trades in Milwaukee because it was easier to fit into parking spots than the land yacht.  So, the Eagle was sold, and mom got the wagon.  She wasn't happy until 1993 when my brother and sister were born.  She loved it then because she could get three of the old school tanks of  car seats across the back seat.  And it went though the snow very well.

In 95, we sold that wagon for 200 bucks (wish I coulda had it) and dad bought Mom an 89 Voyager.  I hated that van, that heavy sliding door, ugly color, ugly pinstriping.  Everything in and out was black or burgundy.  The car always broke down, got stuck, radiator hoses blew, it was terrible.  She got a winter vehicle later on.  87 Dodge Power Ram, 7 mpg, city, highway, towing a trailer, always the same.

In 2000 we won the lottery and Dad's gift to himself was a brand new 2000 Silverado.  Which he still has, lettered for his business. And 10 years later, it only has 30,000 miles on it.  It's never driven in rain, snow, cold, extreme sun, anything that could damage the frame, body, or paint.

We got rid of the van for a 95 Jimmy in 02, which we still have after 204,000 miles, an engine top end rebuild, and a junk yard trans.  My sister drives it now.  And mom was given a 2002 TrailBlazer which she still drives.

That's an un-necessary history of our daily drivers that I remember.

Cool Tom, I think it was interesting. It's a shame your Eagle gave you troubles. I guess it's really random. I've been fortunate with Chryslers and previous to that AMC's. My brother gets GM and they always break down. My sister swears by Hyundais. To each his own.

I bet the ford wagon was really cool. I  actually like brown on a car. You don't see it often anymore.

While shopping for the 1990 Mercury wagon, I test drove a 1990 Dodge Caravan. It had a great sound system, and it needed it to cover up the awful noise the sliding door made when it didn't seal and wind whistled through it at 35 mph. I didn't buy that mini-van and have had a low opinion of them since then. Just where do you put all those seats if you suddenly need to load something long in it, and you're not at home? The utility of a wagon can't be beat, with the flat load floor and nothing needs to be removed.

I was curious if this was still an active thread since the last reply was  in 2010.

My favorite car is the Jeep CJ. I like the flexibility of changing tops and doors. The appearance can vary in just a few minutes by taking the top down, switching to a bikini top, leaving the doors off, changing to half doors or canvas, or even driving around with the windshield folded down.

I also like the early black period Ford model T, especially the Roadsters.

It's a custom job.  You can buy those cabs now.  They're built to be an extended cab version of the old Model A's.

Where can you get those cabs?  I'd love to convert my 08 Ranger (if it's affordable).

my first ever car was a '68 buick riviera bought in santa monica, ca whilst travelling in 1981. the picture of this less than pristine example is appropriate as mine was a bit of a wreck. the driver's side window was made from a polythene bag.

other fav i owned was a k reg red vw super-beetle 1600cc.

I like Model Ts. Very simple car. This is my 1925, it is not running at the moment. Driving one is totally different than a modern car. I'm looking at my feet in this pic, so I know which pedal to push to shift gears. It has 3 pedals to operate the transmission, one for Forward (low and high gear), one for reverse, and one for the transmission brake (that is the only brake other than the parking/emergency brake lever.)The throttle is on the steering column.

Terry-
The Model T transmission has three drums in it and a planetary gear setup.
Around each drum is a band. Pressing a pedal tightens the band around the drum and stops it from turning. The drums are mounted on concenric shafts and the geard transfer the power from the driven shaft to the rear wheels. It also has a clutch that engages for hi speed.  There is no clutch pedal to push to change gears.

Last Fall we were out puttering about town on our scooters and came across this truck for sale.  After hemming and hawing with the owner I drove off with it for 1200 bucks.

Always wanted one of these.  Not sure why, probably need to have my head examined. :)

It's a 1972 Ford F-250 Camper Special.  360 V-8, C-6 auto trans, power steering and brakes, Factory AC, dual gas tanks that hold 40 gallons total.  I'm the third owner and it seems to have 120,000 miles on it.

All original, even the paint.  I did add the headrests and three point seat belts as I didn't fancy my skull going through the back window from a rear end hit.

Runs shockingly good, fires right up, motor right off in it.  Gets beyond terrible gas mileage, 8mpg, if you keep your foot out of it.

So far it's been a lot of fun, and a blast from the past after decades of driving small vehicles.

One of the things I like about it is the total lack of all modern electronics.  Not a single warning buzzer, safety interlock, computer, or sensor.  It still has points in the distributer and a two barrel carb.  Nor does it have a single emission control component, having been exempt when it was built due to it's GVWR, and we don't have to do smog checks to register it due to it's age.  Pretty much vehicle, pure and simple essence, undiluted and straight.

Title: Re: What are your Favorite Cars???

From what I hear, diesel cars aren't common on that side of the pond, only foreign brands having offered them and GM having tried and failed to make a decent diesel engine using the small-block design as a base pattern... :D

Still, there are diesel gems over there still available, obviously classic cars now, such as the Mercedes W123 300D (or 300DT, with a turbo), those things are bulletproof, and will run on pretty much anything oily, and of course have the looks and class of a Mercedes... ;D

Nice car!  I like old cars in general, but this one Ramil is very clean and looks great.

And no, twocvbloke, diesels are rare over here in cars.  The US car makers only offer them in 3/4 ton and larger pickups, and even there they are huge beasts, so you are not going to see great fuel economy.  Back in the early 80's during the second oil crisis you could get some diesels in cars and small trucks, Toyota offered a 2.2 in their pickup that easily gave mileage in the 35+ mpg range.

I owned a couple of diesel VW Rabbits, one of which, with the 1.5, got 48mpg on the freeway.  Still the best mileage vehicle I've owned.  I rebuilt that engine once, a simple deal of pulling the head and bottom end, but leaving the block in place in the engine bay for honing.  It was a great engine.

Rumor has it that Dodge is going to drop a diesel 3.0 in their 1/2 ton pickup next year that will give 30+mpg on the freeway, that would be a first in a long time for 1/2 tons trucks here.  The US truck market has gone plumb crazy, in my opinion, about horsepower and engine size in the last decades.  Used to be you could buy a full size 3/4 truck with a simple 105 horsepower, 3.9 inline 6 cyl and get mileage in the low 20s on the freeway.

But that was 40 years ago.  You'd think with the tech advances since then that pickups would be giving mileage in the low 30's on the freeway, and mid 20's in town.

I always find it incredible how the big three over there make such large engines in terms of Litres, but they put out such small figures in terms of horsepower and MPG, the general response is "It's all about the torque!!", fine if you're towing a London tower block about, but you have to use up a lot of fuel to get the engines to spin up and maintain that torque, and if all you do is the school run and the weekly shopping, you're wasting so much money on those pigs... :D

All the while, over here you get little engines, be they diesel or petrol, being made that can produce insane horses for the small sizes, and maintain a high MPG (well Miles per Imperial Gallons), and as for Japanese brands like Honda, they produce whopping figures for little 4-pot engines, all of which could run rings around the average american boat... :D

Someday though, the Diesel-engined car will be more common again over there, seeing as diesel is cheaper and more efficient, and modern (well, modern foreign) engines being cleaner burning, less polluting and a lot quieter, the only thing stopping them being used is the paperwork brought in over there years ago to prevent the diesel cars being sold to keep the american people reliant on the ol' petroleum distillate cos that's the moneymaker for the oil co's, it's funny how the governments over the years have played into their hands... :D
Title: Re: What are your Favorite Cars???
Post by: McHeath on March 25, 2013, 03:30:41 PM
Yeah torque numbers have always been widely promoted, at least for trucks.  For example my 72' Ford F-250 has a 360 V-8, 5.8l, and only manages to get 172 horsepower on the ground.  (that's the number on the data plate with the VIN) But the torque figure is 375 pounds, quite a lot.

US car makers have significantly improved their horsepower/displacement numbers in just the last 5 years or so.  But they could do better, for example my 08' Accord has a 146 cubic inch engine (2.4) and has 190 ponies, so well over one horsepower per cubic inch.  (an old benchmark)  It also easily pulls down 31-32 mpg on the freeway, going 70mph, AC on full, and it's a large car.

The US bias has always been towards large displacement engines, which few of us actually need, and so we pay for that with poor mpg.  My dad loved large engines, and he had some whoppers in his cars over the years.  A 352, 390s, the 428 in the Galaxie, 460s in the trucks, massive hulks that were amazingly bulletproof in reliability and thirsty at the pump.

Diesel here, Calif, is more expensive than gasoline and has been for a long time.  The car makers always charge a premium for a diesel engine, often a lot, which you simply won't make back in fuel savings from the higher mpg unless you own the car a long time.  Same for hybrids.

As some wag once said the cheapest car to own and operate is the one you have that's paid for.  ;)

Title: Re: What are your Favorite Cars???
Post by: twocvbloke on March 25, 2013, 05:04:52 PM
Yeah, diesel is more expensive per litre here than petrol, a cleverly thought out intentional price hike to make diesel a similar cost per mile, but the advantage of the diesel engine is you don't have to use the stuff at the pumps that they refer to as diesel (Rudolf Diesel used things like peanut oil in his development stage)... ;D

With an engine such as the Merc W123 300D, old VW engines, most Isuzu engines (which GM used over here until they decided to use their own), all can run on anything from old engine oil to used Canola (or for us brits, Rapeseed oil, same stuff, just a different name) without any modifications, and of course when you refine vegetable oils or even animal fats into Biodiesel, you can use it in more modern engines with relatively few modifications, though you do have to ensure they're compatible with Bio as it can eat away at rubber seals and hoses (see Top Gear & their 24 hour endurance race in a diesel BMW which isn't bio compatible!!), which ends up with a dead car...

Of course, there are cheaper fuels which will work great, but governments will frown upon (often resulting in fines and possibly worse), paraffin being one of them, there's nothing wrong with it, but it's that most of the time there's no fuel duty paid on it and therefore, s'not allowed... :-\

Still, if I ever somehow manage to ever afford to be able to drive, I'd definitely buy a diesel car as a daily driver, though I wouldn't know what as yet cos I have no need to think of what I'd buy, but it'd probably be a Honda Accord (Euro, sold as an Acura across the pond) tourer... :D

One of my favorite tales to tell is when I drove my 79' VW diesel Rabbit from California to Austin, Texas.  The car had a super large fuel tank bladder in the spare tire spot, and incredible range.

Filled up in Bakersfield, CA for about 25 dollars.  (this was in 1991 or so)

Next fill up was in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Cost about 27 dollars as I recall.

Arrived in Austin with a quarter tank of fuel left.  (took about 30 hours total, one stop to sleep in a rest stop)

Total miles were about 1,600.  Cost of fuel about 53 dollars.  So that's about .03 cents a mile.

Wish I had kept that car.

Yep, diesel engines are very frugal things, though even modern ones can be just as frugal in larger cars, they may not have the same get up & go as a petrol engine, but they get the same job done, economically, and you don't hit traffic jams as fast to boot... :D

My favorite was also my first car, a 1970 Fiat Sport Spider 850 bought in 1972. I bought it for $250 after its former owner had rolled it and left it top down in a parking lot for a little over a year. Needless to say, it needed a new top and a new floor, and some bodywork - if I recall correctly the work cost me $500, but it was the best car I ever had as far as economy of operation.

Gearing down on the exit ramp from the 401 highway, it sounded like a real race car!

I would fill it up in Toronto and drive it to Brockville, the round trip costing me just about $5. Just the perfect car for a 20 year old kid to have. It was truly a chick magnet :) About a year and a half later, I traded it in on a used '73 LeMans Blue with white roof, same as the cop car in Smokey and the Bandit 1), and got $2000 for it - enough to pay for it, its insurance, repairs and all the gas I had ever used in it, still leaving money for the new car. Still,   I wish I had kept it.

I loved that car!

Funny thing is the next car I owned after the blue/white Lemans which replaced it was a '76 beige LeMans, oddly, but not intentionally, identical to  the cop car in Bandit 2!) When I bought both of the LeMans's, I hadn't even seen the movies!

I'm not old enough to drive yet, but if I did I really like the older Fords and Cadillacs. My favorite is the late 70's LTD or Cadillac 2 door.

I think I liked the Cadillacs because I saw them every day, a neighbor had one in their garage (old lady) and another neighbor had 2 in their yard. They have both seance left.

Here are two pictures I found on Google, its funny the Cadillac is from MN, where I live, though they won't survive a winter or the vynal tops a summer here.

Put it this way, it's like drilling a hole in your med blue 500 to fit a TT pad. The Raptors don't look right with a plow on, plus rust from the plow will stain the bumper and the value of the truck will be gone.

And if you only have an RWD truck, then you're just better off getting out and shovelling snow by hand, cos they lack weight over the drive wheels... ;D

Plus with an engine that size, it's not safe to plough more than 500ft away from a petrol station, cos you'd be bound to drain the tank in no time... :P

Okay, 750ft from a petrol station then.... ;D

Over here, anything bigger than 3 Litres for an engine is a waste for a domestic vehicle, heck, we use 4 and 5 litre engines in buses, though smaller "hopper" buses often have 6L Cummins diesel engines in them just to make them more nimble on more local routes... :)

In the US, we try to put the biggest, most powerful, and most capable engine possible in a vehicle, although nowadays environmentalists are trying to limit engine horsepower by decreasing fuel consumption. Ford has already figured out how to get around this by just adding a turbocharger to a V6 engine. ;D

They should have that option for the Raptor...

Actually, I am amazed at how engine development has progressed over the years.

I once had a 1964 1/2 Mustang that I bought from my dad in 1969.  I had a 1957 Chev that died, and I really did not want the Mustang, but I relented and bought it for $300.  I held on to it for many years and finally sold it to one of my son's friend's.  It was a sad day when I sold it.  I would feel like a movie star driving around in it.  Everyone waved and held their thumbs up everywhere I went.  I felt like John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt!  It was costing me an arm and a leg to keep it going and replacing broken parts.

It had a 170 cu in 6 cylinder and a 4-speed manual tranny  It was pretty gutless, but everyone was willing to forgive that one aspect of the car.

I later bought a 2000 Mustang 6 cylinder automatic that had far more power and pep than even an 8-cylinder Mustang of days gone by.  I sold that one to my youngest son.  Now I have a Honda CRV with a 4 cylinder, so it's back to gutless, but I am still amazed at how the 4-cylinder does.  The other thing is how many miles they now go.  The 2000 Mustang has 170k miles on it.  Granted it has had a little work done here and there, but nothing major.  I think it was 90k before I even had to change spark plugs.  The older Mustang needed plugs, points and distributor cap about every 5000 miles and I would have gone into the poor house if I didn't do tune-ups and oil changes myself.  Todays engines are designed so much better than before.

Personally, I do not like the big-block gas hogs any more.  Saving money is more important to me than speed or speeding tickets.  More phones for me!  :)

That is very cool, mustangs are nice cars, but I'd never want one. And besides, I'm sure the insurance would be through the roof. (even though I cannot drive yet)

When did you stop driving the 1964 Mustang? Our neighbor has one, but it sat in the driveway so long that he finally put it into storage to prevent it from the elements, but  every once in a while I see it sitting by the side of the house in the summer.

Did your 57 Chevy have the futuristic fuel injection system?

If you insure a car for replacement value, the yes the insurance would be high.  I never did insure for replacement on mine, and so it's a good thing it never got totaled.

I stopped driving the 64 probably about 1998.  Interestingly enough, that kid I sold it to is now married and has kids of his own and moved to another state.  With a twist of fate, my son who now owns my 2000 mustang moved to the same city and state.  Last summer I visited my son and he suggested we go contact his friend and go for a drive in the old Mustang.  Which we did.  I got to once again drive it after all these years.  Me in my old Mustang and my son in his relatively new Mustang, even though they are now both my old Mustangs.

My 57 was a "beater".  It was a station wagon (not a Nomad) and had major rust holes in the back wheel wells.  Every time I drove when it rained, the inside of the car would get very wet. As a 19-20 year old it was about all I could afford.  Needless to say, no fuel injection.  It had a major blow-by and once I stopped to get my daily quart of oil put in and the gas station attendant forgot to put the filler cap back on and it blew all the oil out and that was that for the engine.  I used to call the car "Burner" .  That was its name.  These days gas station attendants no longer exist, and if they did, most would not know where to put oil.

Actually, I think there are two states that still have gas station attendants.  I am visiting one as I type this.  Oregon.  No self service in Oregon, but they don't normally even lift the hood except maybe for the occasional little old lady.

My friend in Texas has a 4-pot Honda Accord (2.4L I think), and it's far from gutless, he's often telling me how he left "American muscle" at the lights, bearing in mind this Accord is the larger version with an american-designed Honda engine (we don't get this engine over here, and we have a different Accord, sold as the Acura TSX across the pond), and, the fuel economy is so ridiculous, with the amount of driving he does in a week, he fills the tank once a month, and yet leaves the likes of ford, chrysler/dodge and chevrolets standing at the lights whilst sipping the fuel... ;D

There have been many nice looking american cars over the years, but that's where my interest stops in them, I wouldn't want to be the owner of one, I'd rather have one of three cars, a Citroen 2CV, a Honda Accord Tourer or an original Austin Mini... :)

I have a Kymco 250 cc scooter.  It gets 75-80 mpg (32-34 km/l), although I am a fair weather motorcyclist and so it is put away for the winter.   Most people would not call that a motorcycle, although at 250 cc it does go freeway speeds.  Around town, it is perfect for commuting to/from work in the summer.

My wife has a Honda Accord with a good sized 4 cyl that is also not gutless.  It gets better gas mileage than the CRV.

I wouldn't mind a scooter, just something to get me out of the house and not rely on buses, I keep looking at chinese scooters (many brands, same basic design), the current one I have my eyes on is a Lexmoto Gladiator (in blue), a 125cc Honda-clone engine, claims they can get 100mpg out of them, but I doubt it, but they nip along at 50mph or so (depending on if you're going downhill with the wind at your back, just like in a 2CV!!), and can get pretty high MPGs... :)

Problem with chinese scooters is you really have to be on the ball with maintenance, not to mention it's a good idea to modify them (as in, replace the stock fuel hose, tyres, valve stems, lightbulbs, wiring connections, etc.), as they're not really known for being well built... ;D
Title: Re: What are your Favorite Cars???

Kymco is South Korean, and I think they sent the instruction book to China for translation to English.  Good quality.  I know someone who bought a no-name Chinese scooter that came in a crate that had to be partially assembled.  They got a "good deal" on it that way.  It was a piece of junk.  Nothing seemed to fit, and the instructions for assembly did not make sense to anyone.

I have had good luck with mine.  I had a 2 stroke 50 cc before that which got stolen.  I really like the bigger one.  I think if I do sell this one some day, I will get a real motorcycle.  The small donut tires are not as stable as a bigger motorcycle tire.  The larger diameter wheels have more of a gyroscopic effect that make them more stable.  That is the one complaint I have of the scooter style at higher speeds.  It just does not feel as stable as I'd like it to be.
Title: Re: What are your Favorite Cars???

Yeah, some off the cheaper "great deal" scooters are not the best choice, here in the UK there's a company called Direct Bikes who imports them, an they're pretty much what you describe, arriving in a crate with chinglish instructions on how to build the thing, but Lexmoto, who buy the same bikes in, do all that work for you, so what you get delivered is usually immediately roadworthy (Taxed, MOT'd and plated), but the appeal for me is they're cheap to run, £16 a year road tax, about £200 a year insurance and the rest is fuel (though that's getting more pricey as the days go by!!)... :)

I wouldn't like to go for a full motorbike though, all too often you hear about people on motorbikes being killed due to stupid drivers not looking out for bikes, or because the bikers think it's great to scream along country roads and then wonder why they're flying through the air after slamming into a car when they're riding on the wrong side of the road... :-\

I went to England once, and even though I didn't drive while I was there, it was the strangest thing to get used to looking to the right, and then the left before crossing a street.  Probably a good thing I didn't try to drive.  A few years ago, I lent my car to someone visiting Seattle from London.  He had never driven over here.  He said he only got screwed up while trying to make turns.

Fortunately the car came back in one piece.  Oh, and he said it was the darndest thing that every time he went for the turn signal, the wipers turned on  :)

Attached is a photo of the 1956 Ford Popular that I drove for a while over there.  Its top speed was about 45mph and it cost me about $40 to purchase.

Hey TwoCV,

The picture of the burgundy and black 2CV you posted earlier in this thread is a shot of that car that makes it look really nice!

There were some interesting features in those vehicles.

Didn't they have the ability to raise and lower the ride as you drove and if you needed to change a tire, you just raised the suspension to the highest setting, put a prop under the body near the wheel that needed to be replaced, then lowered the suspension and as the rest of the car settled down, the wheel you needed to work with stayed up off the ground.  That was pretty cool for 1950s technology.

No, that was the Citroen DS that had the hydraulic suspension that did that,  the 2CV had the suspension that was interconnected between front & rear, so that when the front wheel hit a bump, the rear wheel responded in time to cushion the bump, resulting in a ride so smooth that you can drive over a ploughed field at speed with a basket of eggs on the seat and not have one of them break... :)

The 2CV also had seats that were essentially hammocks on rubber bands, resulting in a rather comfy seat (I used to have a set of 2CV seats that were nice to sit on when playing games on my old Playstation), most other cars at the time used sprung seats (or even hard benches with a little cushioning) that were often quite uncomfortable to sit on for a long drive, but Citroen (well, technically Piérre Boulanger) decided to be different and make something comfortable while at the same time was cheap to make so poorer french people could afford to buy the 2CV... :)

When I think of the car that I most hated to retire, the one that comes quickly to mind was our 1984 Conquest (Chrysler branded version of the Mitsubishi Starion).

It's styling was just different enough and there were relatively few of them that I usually got noticed wherever I went.  The performance was great, but the two features that stand out in memory are the digital display (relatively uncommon in those days) and the seat comfort, with loads of adjustments.  I really miss the adjustable thigh support on the front edge of the seats.

The digital speedometer was switch-selectable between miles per hour and kilometers per hour.  Occasionally when driving someone around, I'd throw the switch to km/h when at a stop light and gun it when it torned green.  The turbo kicked in and the passenger got a surprise when glancing sideways at the speed display.

We drove that one until it literally rusted apart (thanks to the northern road salt).

Austin tried the "Digital dashboard" thing back in the 80's too, which even had a speaking feature too (to tell the driver about warning lights and things, cos it's just too hard to look at the dash!!), didn't last long though, literally, they conked out before the warranty was up, so finding one today that still works is like a needle in a very large and rusty haystack... ;D

I did find the "Voice Alert System" somewhat annoying.  Fortunately, it had a limited vocabulary and was sparingly used.

It's interesting that both the Conquest and Austin displays still used mechanical odometers.  They weren't ready to trust electronics to record (and accurately retain) the miles driven.  The Nissan design was a few years later -- next generation tech.

I think for Austin, it was a case of they didn't know how to make something electronic to record the info reliably, much like how they didn't really know how to make a decent car for the 80s without using designs from the 1950s, as most 80s Austins, MGs and Rovers are pretty much puddles of orange rust water now...  ;D

And of course today, any brand new MGs you see on the road are actually made in china... :o

We came across an old photo today. It is a photo of my 1973 Pontiac LeMans as I prepared to leave Ontario for the Island on May 10, 1978, hauling a small utility trailer carrying all of my worldly possessions!

I drove down non-stop. As I rounded Woodstock, NB., I fell asleep at the wheel, and awoke to the sound of a tractor trailer coming strait at me. I pulled over and slept for what seemed like hours, but in reality it was only 15 minutes - I could sleep no more. I continued on, across the ferry, and to our home on PEI. That night and for the next few, I couldn't sleep - it was too quiet, and I was used to the night noise of Ontario!
This was my second car, preceded by a 1970 Fiat Spider 850.

P.S. This car was the same colour and type driven in the Smokey and the Bandit, part 1 by the Sheriff. Oddly, my next LeMans was a 1976 tan coloured car, the same as the Sheriiff used in Smokey and the Bandit, part 2! When I bought them, I hadn't seen either movie. Jakie Gleason played Sheriff Buford T. Justice of Portague County in both.

Here is my 45th Anniversary 09 Mustang. It's parked out in the garage where I keep my collection of telephones. This is our summer car and we use it when head south on our vacations.

This is now my favorite '50s car: the 1956 Ford Fairlane!

I love the two-tone color schemes these came in, very tasteful!

My friend who owns a Dodge dealership just took me for a spin in a 707hp 2015 Charger Hellcat.  That is my new favorite car.

Nice! I'm glad to see Dodge is really getting back into performance cars after the end of their great years in the late '60s- early '70s. Every other company was doing poorly those years. I'll even admit that I hate Fords of that era; the Chrysler family ruled then.

I wish the Charger would go back to being a 2 door, like the Challenger still is. It wasn't a good idea to make it a 4 door; it makes a terrible squad (definitely fast enough, not tough or practical enough, especially in our northern winters) and that extra set of doors has to be horrible for high performance handling IMHO.

I have fond memories of a 1950 Plymouth coupe that my dad owned a long time ago.  It didn't really have a back seat, but there was a padded stool behind the seat that fit on the hump in the middle of the car.  Some people called it the mother-in-law's seat.  I have a picture of the car along with myself and my parents.  I'm the little boy in the picture.  I think this picture was taken sometime when LBJ was President.

Thanks. I am not the 2nd owner, but the 5th.  I have  had it for 8 1/2 yrs now.

'68/'69 Chevelles are my all time favorite. Yours is sweet! You don't see many 4 speed bench seat cars. I remember seeing a COPO '69 roll across the block at Barrette-Jackson that was a post car instead of hard top, bench seat, hub cap car with a L-72 and a 4 speed.

One of my favorite cars is the '94-'96 Impala SS. I had this gray-green '95 for about 6 years. It was bone stock, but that LT1 had plenty of power. I had a Chevelle back in the day that I thought was pretty cool. I challenged one of these on the highway and lost big time. From that day on I wanted one. I traded it for a Suburban, which was probably a bad idea. My dad has a '94 wagon which will be a SS clone as soon as I get my hands on it.

My close second is the Pontiac G8. It is an awesome all around performer and very pleasing to the eyes. It's also Pontiac's last performance vehicle, ever. Mine was a GT with the 6.0. I used it for a work car, which was breaking my heart. I put a ton of miles on each week. I let her go to an owner who could treat her better and traded for a GMC 2500 HD with a Duramax.

My favorites are 50s cars, followed by 40s and early 60s cars.  I love 40s and early 50s Buicks in particular, but I love almost all 50s cars.  My baby is a 54 New Yorker station wagon, and yes, it has a Hemi.  My truck is a 73 GMC 3/4 ton.  NO SMOG CHECKS!

I have been lucky enough to own my favourite cars, with the exception of this one, which sadly I will now never get to own.

An all time favourite, 90 or 110, both great vehicles.

Well, I reckon my favorites would have to start with my 1976 Eldorado, then my 2006 Ford Ranger at present.
Dream vehicles would have to be a 40 Ford P/U Truck and a 37 Cord.
Oh! Forgot to mention my Canary yellow 58 Chevy Belair I had, until it was stolen.  :'(
It was the first car I ever bought with my own money, I paid $58 for it in 1972 if my memory serves me right.

My all-time favorite is the 1950 Buick Roadmaster and Super, in that order, followed by the 40, 41, and 42 Buicks.  I also love the 58 - 60 Cadillacs, and almost all 40s, 50, and early 60s cars.  Have no use for "appliance mobiles" though.
