Bill, it sounds like you're describing the 701 compared to the 702 models. Both are Princesses, but they have several differences, as you pointed out. The 702 started in 1963, at which time the 701 was discontinued. The 702 also has an internal ringer and is a bit heavier. Yes, those slots were for hearing the ringer and possibly for ventilation for the light. The slotless bases on the 701 models retain their "gold" a whole lot better than the 702s.
