FWIW, mine is in waaaayyy better cosmetic condition, and I bought it for a fraction of the asking price of this one.

It's amazing how much a 1200 baud modem will sell for. I really wonder what makes them special compared to a regular modem? Non-standard signaling or something?

It probably has to do with computer collectors building a period set-up.
Why do phone collectors pay high for obsolete technology?

I understand the social side of it, I was just more curious from the tech side of it. I had luck with a regular 56k serial modem controlling my 8000 Protel board, but I had to use a UPMS 1200 to program my 7000 board. I'm just curious as to what is so different about Protel's modem from a tech perspective? I guess it's not a huge demand anymore, but maybe if someone had the right signal testing/monitoring hardware they could decode what was actually different about the communications the Protel modem is doing vs. a regular modem.
