If you connecting to a modern Linux box you might need to set the character encoding.

I keep my default locale settings as the C/POSIX defaults so low page should be ASCII.  I think it is the levels because the adapter I have, I never see it swing both directions when plugged into a DC meter so I suspect the 3.3B and 5V headers are both 0-line not +/- like RS-232 wants.  That's what I get for not researching every little detail...but the necessary shifter is on the way.

Rumor has it some late era modems could still kick down into as low as 300-baud territory if they were able to detect that the remote modem needed it.  I don't have a computer with a modem myself anymore, but a friend has a couple older towers, maybe I could setup a real modem-modem connection and test that way.  Whichever happens sooner I guess, things taking a while in the mail...
