Title: K6 & other GPO Telephone Boxes
Post by: david@london on April 26, 2012, 02:54:29 PM
here's a piece from today's edition of The Guardian [UK] newspaper about BT selling off some more of our lovely K6 telephone boxes. if i had my way they'd all be put back in our streets, country lanes etc

i was wondering what international shipping costs would be, but tom jones has already found out : £50,000 from south wales to california ...........

"Thursday 26 April 2012

Red telephone kiosks have been used as libraries, sculptures, stores for life saving medical equipment and have even provided a storyline for The Archers. But now you can buy one of your own, as BT has decided to sell off decommissioned boxes for the first time in more than 25 years.

The company is selling 60 traditional "K6" boxes, which have been fully refurbished and resprayed in the original red and black livery, for £1,950 plus VAT and delivery.

The K6 was introduced in 1936 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V, and by the end of production in 1968 there were nearly 70,000 nationwide. It was designed by architect Sir Giles Scott who was also responsible for Battersea power station, the building that now houses London's Tate Modern, and Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral. Although the Royal Fine Arts Commission endorsed Post Office red as the standard colour, Scott disapproved, recommending that the outside of urban boxes be painted silver and rural kiosks dove-grey.

BT sold off thousands of the boxes to private buyers in the mid-1980s, and since 2008 has sold a further 1,800 to local communities for just £1 each through its Adopt a Kiosk scheme. This has seen boxes transformed into art galleries, public libraries, exhibitions, information centres and fitted with life-saving defibrillation machines, while villagers from Shepreth in Cambridgeshire even turned their kiosk into a one-night-only pub named the Dog and Bone.

Now just 11,000 of the 51,500 public kiosks remain as traditional red boxes, and a spokesman for BT says the number is likely to reduce gradually in line with demand.

While the asking price may seem a bit steep for what is effectively a cast iron box with a teak door, buyers will be getting a bargain compared to the £50,000 singer Tom Jones is reported to have paid for a kiosk to be shipped over to his mansion in California.

The kiosk, originally sited on the corner of Laura Street in Treforest, near Pontypridd, south Wales, was the one from which he first chatted to his future wife Linda. He said: "We didn't have a phone in our house back then so I spent hours every night in the call box.

"It was a call in that very box that I learned I had become a father, and once when it rang in the States I found out I was a grandfather."

Potential buyers should call 01636 61110 or place an order with X2 Connect. Those who miss out on the 60 kiosks currently available will have the option to bid for full-size fibreglass K6s decorated by artists as part of the BT Art Box exhibition during June and July."

I think that I have only ever seen one of these in person.  It is in the Chicago suburb of Glenview, not far from where I used to live: link (http://www.flickr.com/photos/eddie-chicago-railfan/5168417838/lightbox/).

That's funny, I thought the old K6 boxes were "Listed buildings", meaning they can't be sold off to anyone and removed from their locations.... ???

There's also one in Rowley, MA -- on the way to one of the large local flea markets.

It's been a real treat to pass it in the dark and see it illuminated by the headlights when planning to arrive at the flea market before dawn.

Weird, unless BT has blocked incoming calls to that number, but just to be sure, I can see it as 0207 823 3610, I'm just too cheap to try and dial it (though I do have many, many minutes on my mobile, so I could, if I wanted to!!)... :D

Do they use Plexi (you guys call it somthing different I think) for unbrekable windows in some of these booths? Looks like the clear panel over the pink pull ign has been melted by something?

Post by: david@london on May 30, 2012, 04:21:08 AM

yes Terry, they are plexi-glass  panels with right-angled edges (like shoe box lids) which are held in place with screws. people do tend to scratch graffiti into them & burn them.

i'm pretty sure that originally the windows were plate glass, but these plexi panels are at least very quick to replace.

This design is unique to Edinburgh, so not really for Doctor Who fans, they are cast iron, so the P&P may be rather steep, shall we say..

I've just noticed in that picture that the ugly steel plinth with the tube coming out of it is a CCTV camera pole, charming isn't it?

Look how it complements the two classic pieces of street furniture, do you think folk will be flocking to buy that monstrosity when it reaches end of life?

........heck, these are great !.........don't think i've ever seen one, tho i've been to edinburgh once or twice.

...........i just hope that a good few remain on the streets of edinburgh.....what a lovely design, like a little greek temple.

the english, dr who-type ones are very different.......and i'm wondering - how many of those still exist ?  both are fantastic designs but for me, these scottish ones take the cake !

David, I know a lot of the classic (I'm presuming London style) TARDIS boxes, were steel framed and concrete and thus when no longer needed, simply demolished, so not a lot left.

I've never seen one on all my trips to the big smoke!

Looks like it was built in place when you look at the slope it is built on. But then, I'm wondering if the ground really is as sloped as it looks as the red K6 shows no signs of being leveled to the ground via the base plate yet it looks verticle.

David - I have seen the one at Piccadilly Circus jumping off the back a route 9 Routemaster, pretty small TARDIS though!

Terry - the box is probably on its original foundations, the area it is in (The Grassmarket) was half pedestrianised decades ago, the left of the pic is shut off to traffic now so probably the council ramped up the right hand side hence the strange elevation on the base.

But that's the fun of a TARDIS, it doesn't follow the laws of physics, so outside may be small, but inside it could be massive... :D

Time And Relative Dimensions In Space, it messes with 'em...  :D

There is one of those exact kind of cast Iron telephone boxes that has been for sale for as long as I can remember at an antique shop in Columbia SC.  It is sitting outside in the yard in the rain and sun.  The Glass is gone and it needs painting, but is otherwise intact.    It weighs a veritable ton which is why I suspect no one has ever wanted to buy it.   How it came to be here in America I have no clue.

We have a few in the Vancouver area. I know of one outside an Antique store wit ha working Telco payphone in it. We had a restaurant / pub chain called "The Elephant & Castle" and they all had an English phone box out front. They can go for big bux but as you say, they are not easy to move. They are cast iron and don't weigh a veritable, they weigh an ACTUAL ton! I was offered one for free not that long ago (local as well) and almost went for it but decided not to in the end. I think some company broght  "boat load" of them to North America.

Gee,  I thought you could get one to Melbourne like putting a note in a bottle and having it arrive there some day.

On a related note, I hear there is a bid debris field a few hundred miles in width due to arrive soon on the West Coast of the US from the Japan earthquake.  Probably just Coke bottles and no phones.

Debris doesn't respect borders either. Already lots of it showing up on the West Coast of British Columbia. There could be phones, we already had a Harley Davidson Motor Cycle wash up on our shore!

Terry

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/1171551--harley-washed-up-on-b-c-shore-to-be-returned-to-japanese-owner

A Japanese man is to be reunited with his beloved Harley-Davidson motorcycle found washed up on the B.C. coast last month.

Harley from Japan washes up on B.C. shore

The "hog," still bearing a Japanese licence plate, was discovered by beachcomber Peter Mark while riding his ATV in Naikoon Provincial Park. The container, washed away by the deadly tsunami more than a year ago, was carried by the Pacific Ocean currents some 5,000 km with the motorcycle still inside.

Ikuo Yokohama, a 29-year-old resident of the town of Yamamoto, in Miyagi Prefecture, was tracked down by a Harley-Davidson representative in Japan who saw the story first reported by CBC News.

A spokesperson for Milwaukee-based Harley Davidson told CBC News they are now hoping to pay for the return of the bike to Yokohama, who lost three family members and his home in the devastating tsunami caused by a massive earthquake off Japan in March 2011. He is still living in temporary accommodations.

Yokohama told Japanese television station NHK the discovery of the motorcycle was miraculous and he wished to thank the B.C. man who found it personally, but so far he has only been able to do so via TV.

When asked what he would like to say to his Harley, Yokoyama laughed and said in Japanese, "Thanks for coming back, buddy."

is this the original k2 ?

"Next time you drop past the Royal Academy for an exhibition ...... spare more than a cursory glance at the two red telephone boxes in the entranceway, for these are the original red telephone boxes. The wooden box on the western side is Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's 1924 winning entry in a competition held by the General Post Office to design a new phone box.
The one on the eastern side is one of the first cast iron boxes to be created from this design. This style became known as K2 – Kiosk No. 2 (K1 was concrete and originally painted cream, although they have often been re-painted red since).

Scott – an architect perhaps best known as the designer of the Battersea Power Station – originally envisioned that his design would be silver and made from steel, but the bright red colour was thought to be most visible, particularly in emergencies. And the rest is history...Scott was also asked to design another version for the rest of the country, which became the K3. Like many of the old red telephone kiosks, the ones outside the Royal Academy are now listed  – and both are still fully operational today. So yes, you can still drop by and put in a call from the first red telephone box..."

Hi,

I have been living in UK before coming to USA 1.5 year ago.
I been very tempted to buy and bring a K6 box.
The problem was the logistic.
A K6 telephone box weight 750 kg (1650 pounds) (I think without base).

Today, BT (British Telecom) found a way to keep installed the unprofitable K6, they share the maintenance with local municipalities, BT make the phone maintenance and the municipality make the cabin maintenance.
In other cases they give (or may be sell) the K6 to the municipality, disabling the telephone service (anyway nobody use it), and keeping the British symbol, maintained by municipalities.
http://www.payphones.bt.com/adopt_a_kiosk/HTML/payphone/index.htm

Returning to the weight issue, there are new replica version of K6, made in light materials (plastic & aluminium?) weighting around 90 kg (200 pound).
http://www.thephoneybox.com/
Obviously it"s a decoration item, not a collector one.

More information about British telephone boxes in wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_telephone_box

Cheers
Claudio

i remember the k8s... not white though, like these in kingston-upon-hull. ours were usually oxidised pink.

Kingston upon Hull was the only area of the UK not under the Post Office monopoly, with telephones being under the control of the Corporation of Hull (city council). In Hull and the surrounding area this meant that the telephone boxes were painted cream and had the crown omitted. The Hull telephone system was subsequently privatised and is now operated by Kingston Communications. Kingston Communications (KC) removed many of the famous cream K6 boxes circa 2007. An outraged public complained that they were losing part of their heritage. KC have retained approx 125 K6s in use today. KC allocated limited numbers (approximately 1,000) to be sold to the general public, and many were sold off before they had even been removed from service.

You might try looking on Craigslist for your client... I saw one of these a month or so back, located in Central to Western-ish Kansas. That would, logistically, be better than from FL. Goodness knows if it is still on there? If I get the time, this weekend, I'll try to find it for you.

I met him on craigslist (never in person), He had posted a wanted, I contacted him to advise him of the weight and logistics of moving one of these  original booths, I have heard these booths are 1200-1800 pounds depending on when it was made and if the glass had been replaced with plastic.
He had already researched that part of the project  and was still interested, so I send him leads when I find them, this has been ongoing for about 2 years. 2 weeks ago I found 1 on craigslist that I sent him, It turned out to be a high quality repro. So he is still looking.

Looks like that one needs more than paint, the base (which usually gets planted in concrete) looks like its been broken, probably when it was extracted from it's concrete shoes, though I'm sure a bit of welding or something could fix it up again... :)

Old Police Boxes in Glasgow.............from today's Daily Telegraph

"Most British cities got rid of their old police call boxes, but in Glasgow there are still 6 of these on the streets.
This one, down beside Barrowland Park at Glasgow Cross, is still used for its phone by the Glasgow City Council Community Safety Team and Police Scotland.
In Glasgow they were originally painted red, (there is still one red one on Sauchiehall Street)."

the old 'button A/button B' coin boxes were still in use in the sixties.

you'd insert your coins and dial...........if the party answered, button A would deposit the money and you could talk -  button B returned the money.

I picked up a couple of contribution pictures for this topic over the last 7 weeks.

The first is at the old Dockyards at St. john on the Caribbean island of Antigua.

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th are at Stanley, the capital city of the Falkland Islands off the east coast of Argentina and yes, I know that I shouldn't be mentioning the Falkland Islands in the same sentence along with Argentina!

Notice the apparent change in weather between these two locations!

Does anyone know if two of these phone boxes with the solid area around the door handle indicates a different model? The island seemed to have a mixture of these two types.

Seeing as how the "Brits" are weighing in on this, here is a bonus shot for you from Barbados!

I always liked the straight forward name "Cable and Wireless". I don't know if they were originally a part of the Post Office Telephones or part of another government department or maybe always independent. I see them as the company that tied the commonwealth countries together via telephone and telegraph thus Cable & Wireless was how they did it. Presumably they just provided the connection to the rest of the world for some of the smaller colonies telephone systems while maybe they provided complete phone systems in other countries. I worked with a guy in Saudi Arabia for awhile in 1985 who had previously worked for Cable &'Wireless on Seychelles.

Now I will head to wiki and see what else I need to know about them.

<edit> Okay, I'm back. I got it fairly close. I also saw "LIME" in many Caribbean islands and elsewhere and they are related as well. Here is the wiki info:

Yep, Cable & Wireless did a lot of telephony here in the UK, but mostly associated with cable TV, I have a C&W CTE5 master socket somewhere, they took over a lot of the Nynex-owned cable networks here, then NTL took over C&W's cable networks, then they merged with Telewest, and then they both got swallowed up by VirginMedia... :)

Title: Re: K6 & other GPO Telephone Boxes

It depends on the country some countries like Finland, and Estonia have NO public telephones left.  Some like Sweden and Belgium will be without public telephones by the end of this year.  Some like Holland have removed most but kept some where there is enough usage and or advertising on the kiosks.  However one exception to this trend is in Cuba which limits access to cell phones so payphones are still used there and I think there even installing more.  One other thing to remember is that In most countries the ILEC still operates at least some of the payphones unlike the United States where in most areas all you can find today are Cocots.

Bruce Martin, architect - obituary
Architect whose modernist designs for the K8 telephone box were commissioned by Tony Benn.

Bruce Martin, who has died aged 97, was the architect responsible for the K8 – the last of the cast-iron red telephone boxes commissioned by the General Post Office; launched in 1968, it was hailed as a masterpiece of industrial design.
In 1965 Martin was one of three architects invited by the GPO to submit proposals for a new public telephone kiosk. This would carry forward the lineage established in the 1920s by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's 1926 K2 and his 1936 K6, or "Jubilee" kiosk, but update it for the modernist tastes of the 1960s. A previous design by Neville Conder, the K7, had been scrapped after it proved unable to stand up to the British weather.
After analysing the Gilbert Scott design, Martin embarked on a careful rationalisation of the K6. To make it easier to assemble and maintain, he reduced the number of components required from 450 pieces (without fixings) to just 183 including every single screw and nut, and did away with Scott's classically ordered small panes and glazing bars, replacing them with sheets of toughened glass which made the kiosk, from the sides at least, completely see-through and (with higher levels of illumination inside) less likely to be vandalised.
Gilbert Scott's domed roof was replaced with a much flatter design. Instead of requiring factory assembly, the K8 could be put together on site and configured in a variety of different ways, such as switching the swing of the door to suit the surroundings.
In 1966 the Postmaster General of the time, Tony Benn, chose Martin's design over that of his rival Douglas Scott (the third contender having dropped out). However, in response to GPO concerns about rigidity and cost, Martin changed the materials involved from aluminium and fibreglass to cast iron, except for the door which remained aluminium for ease of opening. The K8 also saw a slight change of hue from "Post Office Red" to the slightly more orangey "Poppy Red".
Some 11,000 K8 kiosks were manufactured during the late Sixties and Seventies and, with a projected life span of 50 years, they should probably have become the modern equivalent of the much-loved K6. But when BT began decommissioning boxes in 1984 the K8s were first in the firing line. A nationwide campaign saw 3,000 red telephone boxes listed following a public outcry over BT's plans, but they were mostly of the classic K6 type. At the time the K8s fell foul of the rule that buildings less than 30 years old cannot be protected.
In 2007, however, when it was reported that the number of working K8s had fallen to around a dozen (though more have been discovered since), the Twentieth Century Society launched a campaign to have the remaining boxes listed. Since then some 10 of the boxes have been given Grade II status by English Heritage.
Bruce Martin was born in Clapham, south London, on December 20 1917 to a French mother and an English father, an electrical and mechanical engineer who worked for the Admiralty. He was brought up near Portsmouth dockyard, where he decided to become an architect....

Sir John Soane's telephone box mausoleum

London's red telephone boxes have long interested visitors, and no doubt quite a few visit Sir John Soane's mausoleum in the churchyard of Old St Pancras. The shape of the tomb was a direct influence on Giles Gilbert Scott's design for the famous phone booths.

Interesting to note that the K6 phonebox is decorated with one of three
different designs of Royal Crown, by which boxes can be dated as either
1936-1953 or 1955 & later.

This Wiki entry has more details:

From 1926 onwards, the fascias of Post Office kiosks were emblazoned with a prominent crown, representing the British government (of which the Post Office was an agency). The design was initially the "Tudor Crown", then in widespread use in government service. The same crown was used in all parts of the United Kingdom and British Empire. On the K2, the design was pierced through the ironwork, and acted as a ventilation hole. On the K6, a separate ventilation slot was provided, and the crown was embossed in bas-relief.

In 1953 the new Queen, Elizabeth II, decided to replace the Tudor Crown in all contexts with a representation of the actual crown generally used for British coronations, the St Edward's Crown. This new symbol therefore began to appear on the fascias of K6 kiosks.

St Edward's Crown was initially used on kiosks in all parts of the United Kingdom. However, in Scotland, following protests over the use of English insignia, the Post Office (like other government agencies there) began to use, from 1955, a representation of the actual Crown of Scotland. To accommodate the two different designs of crown on K6 kiosks, the fascia sections were henceforth cast with a slot in them, into which a plate bearing the appropriate crown was inserted before the roof section was fitted.

The crowns were originally painted the same red as the rest of the box. However, since the early 1990s, when the heritage value of red kiosks began to be widely recognised, British Telecom has picked out the crowns (on both K2s and K6s) in gold paint.

There used to be at least 3 large stashes of British booths in the US,
One stash was in Texas,
One stash was in Kane County, IL
and the other stash was in Florida, (by the panhandle).
There were most likely  others.
A local guy had 2 that he imported, I found another close by in a storage lot in Teller County, CO. None of these came from the 3 stashes I mentioned. I could of bought the spare booth or the storage booth for about $1,500-$1,800 10-15 years ago.

Logistics of moving, storage and restoration ruled it them out , so did the price.

The guy with 2 had a crane lift them into his yard, I saw them in his backyard and rang his doorbell. Years later he moved 1 to an antique shop for sale. I don't think it ever sold.
On the storage lot booth, the owner moved to Glenwood Springs and left the booth in outdoor storage. I did correspond a little with him. I don't know what finally happened with it.

"Too expensive to maintain" sounds like a nonsense excuse. What needs maintaining on a 2000lb hunk of cast iron? Built to last a thousand years, just occasionally paint it, maybe lubricate the door hinge once every decade.
Title: Re: K6 & other GPO Telephone Boxes

So true, but window glass and the phone inside has to be maintained. If it were not for the idiots who have to destroy or paint or just deface a public used item. They wouldn't be expensive to maintain.

Was the picture of the booth destroyed by a vehicle, done by accident? Or was or deliberate.

I remember seeing walk up payphones in town that were fine, but all the sudden some one has to get stupid and destroy a payphone to get their jollies?
There was a woman who needed a payphone because of an emergency, but the only one near by was rendered unusable because someone ripped the handset off and painted the phone red with a can of paint.
So the phone company decided to remove the entire thing.
Up to that point it was a well used phone.
This was before cell phones were in everyone's pocket..

Mike Crowther, Chairman of Atwick Parish Council said: "On Saturday May 13 a driver came down the hill from Hornsea, ploughed through the stone planter, through the telephone box and finally came to a rest having done quite a lot of damage to the car and to the village."

V good to hear that BT were persuaded to reinstate the public telephone box in this village, where apparently the mobile (cellphone) signal is quite poor. If there's no mobile signal in a particular area, public call boxes should be de rigueur - or a legal requirement, imho.

New K6 and stone planter .....

Not only the box is remarkable but also the pole behind it. It seems the houses around are wired straight from this single pole? So the phone box is something like the "central office" of the village :-)

Generally: rural, from telephone kiosk underground to pole, from pole to pole/s until close to the green street junction box then underground from near pole and into box. Same for houses, to pole/s to junction box.

In town, may run underground all the way to exchange. Distance dependant.

Yes I though it remarkable the pole survived, as well as the pedestal in front of it. The rock wall, and the kiosk didn't, But the after looks nice.

Restoring a GPO K6 phone box?
This company, X2 Connect, would seem to be the correct, BT-approved supplier of paints and spare parts ....

A lot of these boxes now hold defibrillators rather than a phone - we have one in my village. For many years before that the phone in the box was emergency/operator calls only as the coinbox had been removed.

Now that will be an electrifying experience for a person who wonders how these new smart payphones look like, and presses that thing to the ear.  :o

Wow David@. How many times must I have passed that and never knew it's history. Thank you.

Positioned at the side of a car park in France, in the middle of a town centre, I have absolutely no idea why. No phone in there, something akin to a wooden box was hanging loose.

I was rushing and had no time to investigate or take better photos.

A beautiful property in the background, almost Addams Family-esque.

Additional images of AA (Automobile Assoc., UK) emergency kiosks...these were for use by AA members who were sent a pass key on joining the organisation and could then telephone for assistance in the event of a breakdown.

Question to American + Canadian members.....do similar AAA and CAA kiosks exist over there?

I've never heard of such kiosks here, although I'm sure if there were any they would be promptly commandeered as either a homeless shelter or a privy.

Phone kiosk in field given listed status
By David Knights

A DECREPIT phone box in a beckside field at remote Newsholme Dean has received National Heritage List status. The kiosk alongside the weir at Dean Beck, near Laycock and Goose Eye, is a K1, which was Britain's first national telephone kiosk.

One of only seven of its type to survive in the UK, the kiosk is one of 42 structures in Yorkshire this year added to the National Heritage List For England.

Haworth war memorial on Bridgehouse Lane has also been listed, one of a number of war memorials receiving the protected status.

Historic England, said the telephone kiosk is probably a Mk 235 model designed in 1922 by the Office of Engineer in Chief, General Post Office, and introduced in the same year. Production ceased in 1927 when a newer model, the Mk 236 was introduced.

The Newsholme Dean kiosk was moved from its original location and re-purposed for use in the mid-20th century as a housing for water-flow measuring equipment. This was a relatively common occurrence at the time when older telephone boxes became redundant and were re-purposed for use by other utility industries - in this case, the water industry.

The kiosk at Newsholme Dean no longer contains any equipment and is disused.

UK:  Some telephone kiosks were sold off to other telecom operators, but as British Telecom had copyright for the design, only telephone kiosks owned by BT could be red. All others had to be painted in a different colour, hence the black telephone kiosks.

Interesting design CJ, the open booth there. Have never seen one in situ. It is rather an echo of the K boxes with the domed roof and side windows.

Here's a photo from the 1980s of a K6 in Leytonstone High St, London. Visible in the background is a branch of the excellent Pollards...a now defunct chain of bargain goods shops... a flannel undergarments, table cloths & teatowels type of establishment.

Also an Edinburgh Police Call Box now transformed into a coffee bar and a small Police Call Box in Eastcheap, City of London, 1970s...

Sadly, no longer the 'pretty corner' it once was.

Looks like a vehicle possibly took the corner at speed not too much earlier than the Google van did it's drive by.
