Bad news: the handset cover isn't coming off. I tried heating it, and to no avail. Is there any special trick to taking the handset cover off, or do you think this one is permanently glued on?

I have removed several.  Each was held on by a friction fit plus a short strip (about 2" long) of double sided tape.

Slow steady force should eventually get it off.

Heat should have helped loosen the adhesive, so maybe it's just a tight fit.

Where was the strip located? Is it in the middle in the top panel of the handset? Just trying to get an idea as to where I should be applying heat.

The tape strip was centered in the middle of the handle.

Here's a quick snapshot.

Several of these never had the plastic cover removed from the tape, so the adhesive wasn't an issue.  The friction fit was enough to hold them on securely.

The handset cord should be removed, if you haven't already done that.

Thanks for the info, guys! If you know me, I get impatient when something isn't working, and no matter how hard I tried (my dad tried to help pry it off too), no matter how scaulding hot that cover  was, nothing was budging.

My dad finally had the idea of carefully tearing it off, and I went with it. Five minutes later, I had a handset free of cheap metal, and a shredded used-to-be handset cover laying next to it! ;D

The gold colored coating is pretty much worn off in the middle of the handset, but wherever there it gold, it gleams!

The meditation class begins in 20 minutes.
For you, we'll move it up ten minutes.

Congratulations on getting the cover off.

Nice find!

Those handset covers can be a bugger, I have one of my own, but it practically just fell off the handset, I don't think the adhesive strip was ever used.
